Lake Pernica lies right next to the centre of Pernica and is an important biotope for waterbirds. This gives the area a clear focus on nature without limiting it to that alone: there is a shorter trail by the lake, while the Pernica hiking route takes considerably longer. Other points of interest for planning a stay include St Margaret’s Church and Protner Farm, with its named offerings.

Lake, ponds and birdwatching

The artificial lakes Pernica I and II cover a total of about 90 ha and stretch between the settlements of Vosek and Vukovje. Lake Pernica is a stopover site for some rare migratory birds. A trail by the lake runs between the upper and lower ponds; the route around Lake Pernica offers the opportunity to observe waterbirds and birds in the shore areas. The 4 km lakeside trail takes about 90 minutes with stops and is suitable for everyone. Those interested in birdwatching will find a specific focus for their walk here. Migratory birds use the lake as a stopover site, so individual sightings cannot be planned in advance.

Hiking and cycling routes compared

The Pernica hiking route starts at the cooperative building in the centre of Pernica and offers three options. It is 25 km long and can be completed in about eight hours. Compared with the shorter lakeside trail, it therefore takes up a considerably larger block of time. The route passes Šušteršič Homestead, a well-known vineyard worker’s house with a thatched roof. Horse riding is also offered along the route at KK “Zlata horda”; check the current participation conditions in advance.

For cycling, the Pernica–Jakobska cycling route starts in Pernica by the chestnut tree near Gostilna Kramberger. It is 33 km long and generally less demanding. This gives you a choice of different route formats: a lakeside trail, a longer hiking route with three options, and a cycling route. As trail conditions can change, check the current situation before setting off.

St Margaret’s Church

St Margaret’s Church in Pernica was first mentioned in 1361. This date refers to its first mention, not the year the present building was constructed: the current church building dates from 1567. The bell tower, built in 1670, adds to this later building history. Two fragments of ancient tombstones are set into its wall. The different dates make the sequence of the church’s early mention, the church building and the bell tower clear; the tombstone fragments are another specific detail of the structure.

Protner Farm

Visitors can see a herd of fallow deer at Protner Farm. The farm also offers Zaseka meat, venison salami, cooked sausage and gibanica. Confirm current viewing options and product availability before your visit. This makes a visit to the farm easy to plan as a separate activity alongside the trails and historical details in Pernica.
