Wine-growing and tastings at Meranovo, trails through the hilly countryside and activities at Mariborsko jezero give Limbuš its varied character. When planning your stay, you can focus on what interests you most: culture and history, a hike, cycling or time by the water.
Wine-Growing and a Visit to Meranovo
Meranovo is located on Prinčev vrh above Limbuš. The estate is a centre for research in viticulture and winemaking and has a gene bank with more than 400 different grape varieties. Wine-growing here is therefore more than just a subject for tastings: research and the diversity of grape varieties are also part of the place’s character.
Organised wine tastings are available for groups of 10 to 50 people. A visit includes a guided tour of the estate and the hybrid exhibition “Archduke Johann, Father of Meranovo”. If you are planning a tasting, contact the estate in advance to ask about specific dates and booking details.
Hiking and Cycling
Pot na Meranovo is a 3.7-kilometre, approximately one-hour hike of moderate difficulty. It starts in Limbuš at the junction of Ob Blažovnici and Pod gričem streets. The trail crosses the hill where Lembach Castle once stood, then follows the Vrhov Dol ridge to Meranovo. There are views along the way. The route thus combines a specific walking time with a destination also known for wine-growing in Limbuš.
For another perspective on the surrounding area, BIKE Maribor is a circular cycling route through Maribor and the surrounding settlements. The route includes existing local and urban roads, public paths and cycle paths; in places, it follows cycle paths alongside national roads. If you include the route in your plans, bear in mind this mix of paths rather than assuming it is exclusively a cycle-path route.
Mariborsko jezero and Its Shoreline
Mariborsko jezero is designated as a protected landscape park. Sailing, surfing and rowing are possible on the lake. The southern shore is mostly wooded and has shallow areas considered interesting habitats in and around the water. Mariborsko jezero therefore offers both activities on the water and a chance to experience the shoreline landscape.
A June 2020 brochure for the Drava Center in Limbuš listed kayaks, canoes, SUP boards and rowboats for hire. Before travelling, check whether these boats are currently available. This lets you distinguish planning for activities on the water from the sailing, surfing and rowing described above: the Drava Center specifically offers certain types of boat for hire.
Castle Ruins and Sacred History
Limbuš Castle stood on Grajski grič above the village of Limbuš in the Municipality of Maribor. Today, only castle ruins overgrown by green hills remain visible. The town’s history also gives two different dates related to the church: the original Gothic church in Limbuš was built around 1300; a church in Limbuš is first mentioned in writing in 1387. The date of construction and the first written reference indicate different historical milestones.
Another work of art is found in the Kronane glave chapel: the famous Grozdni Altar, dating from the early 18th century, stands there. The chapel and altar complement the church’s medieval associations with a later example of sacred art.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
