Črnomelj combines a settlement history stretching back around 3,000 years with cultural attractions and regional cuisine. Visitors choosing the town for a stay can explore a range of themes: the history of the castle and town, events, a guided tour of the old town, or local food. Each offering has its own focus rather than showing just one side of the town.
The Castle, Town History and Cultural Sites
The Zakladnica is located in the cellar rooms of Črnomelj Castle. Its interactive, tactile exhibition is dedicated to the natural, cultural and ethnological treasures of Črnomelj and Bela krajina. The Zakladnica also serves as a starting point for planning explorations of the town and Bela krajina. The castle presents the history of medieval knights and the Tschernembl family. Access to the castle’s attractions may vary, so it is best to check before your visit.
There are also various cultural points of interest beyond the castle. The Church of Sv. Duha features a late antique mosaic and hosts music events and various exhibitions. The Črnomelj Town Museum collection is housed in the birthplace of poet and writer Miran Jarc. Together, these sites offer different ways to explore the town’s cultural history, from archaeological evidence to literature.
Events and Discoveries in the Old Town
Concerts, exhibitions and other events take place in the castle’s atrium and cellar; the individual programmes vary. The Church of Sv. Duha is also used for music events and exhibitions. If you are planning a trip around specific dates, it is therefore worth checking the programme before arranging your visit.
Jurjevanje traditionally takes place in Črnomelj at the end of June and is considered Slovenia’s oldest folklore festival. Exact dates vary from year to year. The summer programme also includes the youth festival ČrnFest, whose programme and dates change each year as well. Both events offer different reasons to choose your travel dates based on the cultural programme, but this does not mean that fixed dates can be assumed for any particular year.
A guided tour with a local guide takes you through the old town and to its sights; availability may vary. The Krožna kolesarska pot Črnomelj starts symbolically in the historic old town. The guided tour focuses on the town centre and its sights, while the cycling route, which starts in the old town, offers a different way to explore. Check the latest route information when planning.
Regional Cuisine and Nearby Places to Visit
At the market at Ajdovo zrno, you can buy fresh, locally produced food directly from local producers. The market is held regularly, but its schedule varies. Črnomaljske preste are part of the local baking tradition and are associated with women entrepreneurs from Črnomelj. A culinary experience may also include a workshop on baking belokranjska pogača or Črnomaljske preste; dates and availability may vary. The market and baking workshop offer two different ways to experience regional products: buying them directly and baking them yourself.
There are also nearby places to visit outside the town, each with its own focus. At the Black Proteus Visitor Centre in Jelševnik, near Črnomelj, visitors can see the black proteus in its natural habitat. Mitrej nad Rožancem, an archaeological monument set in a forest, is also near Črnomelj. Check the visitor arrangements for the centre and the monument in advance. This allows you to choose between observing nature and visiting an archaeological site without assuming that both destinations are part of a single visit programme.
