The settlement site of Črnomelj has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years, with only brief interruptions. This long history shapes how you see the town: you encounter it not only in an exhibition, but also in a historic town centre, a church with a late antique mosaic, and memories of mining.

The town’s history and its landmarks

The permanent exhibition of the Črnomelj Town Museum collection explores the history of the town, its immediate surroundings, and its population. Archaeological materials, archival sources, photographs, and reconstructions offer different ways to engage with these topics. The collection is housed in the birthplace of the writer Miran Jarc, bringing the town’s history and a building connected with literature together in one place.

The Church of Sv. Duh is located in the historic town centre. It features a late antique mosaic and hosts music events and various exhibitions. The Museum of the Kanižarica Brown Coal Mine focuses on a different period: it presents the history of the mine from its establishment in 1857 until its closure in 1997. The exhibition includes an artificial mine tunnel where visitors can experience what the miners’ work was like.

Landscape parks and experiences in Žuniči

If you want to discover natural and cultural heritage as well as the town’s history, the municipality of Črnomelj has two landscape parks: Lahinja and Kolpa. Both are rich in natural and cultural heritage. The Zakladnica in Črnomelj serves as a starting point for exploring the town and other sights and natural attractions of Bela krajina.

Šokčev dvor in Žuniči is located in the Kolpa Landscape Park. This open-air museum also serves as an information centre. By prior arrangement, you can take part in workshops there, for example on embroidery, processing wool and flax, or making decorated Easter eggs. The Kolpa Landscape Park also offers guided programmes for smaller and larger groups along a variety of routes. These explain the area’s natural features, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

Two hiking trails with different stated routes start in Žuniči: the Grajska pešpot runs between Žuniči and Dragoši, while the Sejemska pot goes from Vinica to Žuniči.

Routes and practical information

You can also get a different perspective on Črnomelj by bike: the Damelj cycling route passes through the historic town centre and, among other places, by Črnomaljski grad and Komenda. When it opened on 28 September 2024, Ajdovo zrno was presented as a tourist arrival and departure point for visitors to the town centre. The facilities mentioned at the time included charging stations for electric cars and a service charging station for e-bikes. Check its current operating status before visiting.
