Pišece brings together several distinct themes for a stay: castle architecture, the history of blacksmithing, a memorial collection and trails of different kinds. The routes offer a particularly clear comparison: they range from an educational trail between two places to a marked circular trail and a path to a 690-metre-high summit.
Castle, Architecture and Park
Pišece Castle was first mentioned in written sources in the early 14th century. Its Romanesque tower dominates the other walls despite later Baroque and Historicist extensions and renovations. The building’s history can thus be understood through the contrast between its defining tower and the later changes. The park surrounding the castle features remarkable exotic trees, adding a distinct landscape dimension to the architecture. A forest path leads from the centre of Pišece to the castle, so you can also combine a visit with a walk from the village centre.
Blacksmithing and Remembrance
Three generations of the Podgoršek family practised the blacksmithing trade in the former forge of the Podgoršek Blacksmith Museum from the second half of the 19th century onwards. The museum displays a collection of tools used by blacksmiths. The continuity of the trade across several generations and the tools they used offer two distinct perspectives on the craft.
The memorial collection in Maks Pleteršnik’s birth house displays furniture, personal belongings and, above all, his books in three rooms. The emphasis on books provides a different focus from the blacksmith museum’s collection of tools. The association that now looks after the Pleteršnik homestead also organises the Pleteršnik Days. As the dates may vary, it is best to check them if you wish to include the event in your plans.
Gabernica and Trails by the Water
The Gabernica spring lies below Orlica, in the small Duplo cave in Pišece. Below the spring is a working mill that has retained its appearance and still grinds flour today. Here, a spring and an enduring craft come together as two distinct themes. An educational trail focused on water, with seven stops, follows the stream from Pišece to Čatež. Conditions and signage along the trail may change; check them before setting out.
Circular Trail or Summit Destination?
The Pišece Forest Educational Trail is a circular route that starts at the village mill. Green-and-yellow markers indicate the trail, which has eleven themed stops. The forest reserve is the trail’s highest point. The marked Pot na Špiček circular trail starts at the pond below Pišece Castle and reaches a summit 690 metres high.
The route’s shape and destination offer different points of reference when choosing a walk: the water-focused educational trail runs between Pišece and Čatež, the forest educational trail is a loop with themed stops, and Pot na Špiček leads from the pond to a summit. This lets you decide whether you would prefer a route between two places, a themed circular walk or a summit destination, without treating the three trails as a single route.
