Čatež Ob Savi brings together river landscapes, a circular route to Sveti Vid, and evidence of church and Roman history as different themes to explore. The confluence of the Sava and Krka is visible from the bridge connecting the town with Brežice. Other points of interest include the Špica viewpoint, St. George’s Church and a Roman milestone. This places landscapes, a described route and historical details side by side, without requiring a fixed itinerary.
Views of the Sava and Krka
The bridge connecting Čatež Ob Savi with Brežice offers a view of the confluence of the Sava and Krka. Špica, at the confluence, is a viewpoint and a popular spot for photographers. This gives you different points of reference for exploring the rivers: the bridge connects the town with Brežice and offers a view of where the rivers meet, while Špica is located at the confluence and serves as a viewpoint. If you are choosing a focus for your visit and distinguishing between a connection and a photo spot, you will find two specific points of interest here.
A circular route from the embankment to the summit
The Čateževa energijska pot is a circular route that starts at Terme Čatež. It follows the Sava embankment, passes through Čatež Ob Savi and reaches the summit of Sveti Vid. The route also reaches St. Vitus Church at the highest point of Šentviška gora. Its described course therefore includes the embankment, the town and a summit; it differs from Špica, the viewpoint at the confluence. St. Vitus is a stop along this route, while St. George is associated with a separate history and a baptismal font.
Church history across several periods
The origins of St. George’s Church in Čatež Ob Savi date back to the 12th century. At that time, a small wooden chapel stood there; it was later converted into a stone building and dedicated to St. George. Parish priest Anton Križnar led the construction of the church, and Bishop Alojzij Wolf consecrated it in 1833. The church also contains a baptismal font dating from 1610. These details refer to different milestones: the early origins, the structural change, a dated furnishing and the consecration. The history of St. George’s Church thus unfolds not through a single date, but across several periods and stages of construction.
A Roman milestone
Another historical artefact in Čatež Ob Savi is the stone milestone of Emperor Antoninus Pius. It dates from 139 to 141 AD. Its partially reconstructed inscription is said to have stated a distance of about 30 miles to the Roman settlement of Andautonia, present-day Šćitarjevo. The date and inscription offer different ways of interpreting the stone: it is assigned to a particular period, while the distance is approximate and the reconstruction incomplete. Alongside the history of St. George’s Church, this is an ancient monument whose inscription offers a cautiously worded statement about the distance.
