Wine and Majolica

Vinarstvo in zbirka majolk Babič offers tastings of its own wines accompanied by Bizeljsko buckwheat cake. It also displays a majolica collection with more than 1,500 vessels from 63 countries. Here, wine and a regional cake meet a collection with an international range. Check the current tasting arrangements before your visit.

Trails through Wine Country and Meadows

The Pot k repnicam trail leads from Stara vas in Bizeljsko to Brezovica, which is known for its repnice. It offers insights into a landscape and way of life that have been connected with vineyards and wine for centuries. If you are interested in winegrowing and the destination of Brezovica, this is a suitable thematic focus.

The Pot ob Sotli starts in Stara vas and leads across meadows towards the Sotla, without any incline. Along the trail, you can observe plants and birds, as well as hares and deer; there are also beaver nests by the Sotla. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Check local conditions before your walk.

The trails differ mainly in their themes: Pot k repnicam represents the connection between the landscape, vineyards and Brezovica, which is known for its repnice; Pot ob Sotli crosses meadows towards the Sotla and offers opportunities to observe nature. This can help you decide whether wine or the riverside landscape will shape your exploration.

Repnica and History

Balon Repnica in Brezovica in Bizeljsko is now open to visitors. It preserves a refuge used during the Second World War, connected to a wine cellar by a narrow underground tunnel. This historic site adds the story of how the area was used to its connection with wine. As visiting arrangements may vary, confirm the current conditions before your visit.

Churches and Collections

The Church of St. Lawrence has a bell tower section that probably dates from the 15th century; the present-day church building was commissioned in 1725. Its Baroque furnishings include the altar of St. John of Nepomuk and a pulpit dating from 1854. These details refer to different elements of the church: a section of the tower and the commission for the present-day building.

The Permanent Ethnographic Collection of Marija Sušnik displays agricultural equipment, dishes and tools, as well as books and photographs focusing on winegrowing. Visits are by appointment. The collection offers another way to explore winegrowing, alongside the landscape and tastings.

The Church of St. Anthony the Hermit stands in Drenovec. It probably dates from the 16th century and preserves Gothic architectural elements as well as an 18th-century altar. Historically, Croatian pilgrims visited the church on January 17, the feast day of its patron saint, and on June 13, the feast day of St. Anthony of Padua. These dates connect the pilgrimage tradition with two feast days; if you are interested in a present-day celebration, check locally for the latest information.
