A total of 55 sausage samples were judged at the “Vlčkovská klbáska” in 2026. That year, the annual competition was held for the 13th time. The samples were assessed anonymously and ranked by taste, smell, appearance and overall impression. This local tradition therefore focuses not only on sausages but also on several clearly defined criteria.

Local Traditions at the Table

“Jedlá starých materí” is also part of Vlčkovce’s events calendar: the traditional event reached its 22nd edition in 2026. Wine tastings are also among the town’s traditional activities. Together, these customs show different facets of local food culture—from a competition with its four judging criteria to events described as recurring traditions.

A Cycling Route and a Run Through Town

The Cyrilo-metodská cycling route passes through Vlčkovce and is 73 kilometres long in total. Leisure cyclists can also ride just one section of the route. This lets you explore the town as part of a longer cycling route without having to cover the full distance.

A different, more local perspective was offered by the traditional Vlčkovský Silvestrovský beh zdravia, which was held for the eighth time on 31 December 2025. The start and finish were at the Vlčkovce sports complex; the adult course ran through the town’s streets. The cycling route and the run thus offer different ways to experience Vlčkovce on the move—one as a section of a 73-kilometre route, the other along a course through the town’s streets.

Vlčkovce is 10 kilometres from Trnava. Public buses connect the two places, and the journey takes 10 minutes. Check the current timetable for your travel date, as exact departure times may change.

The Danubian Lowland and a Protected Alluvial Forest

Vlčkovce lies in the fertile Danubian Lowland, at the transition between the subregions of the uplands and the Danube Plain. The landscape also includes the Vlčkovský háj, where a remnant of an oak, elm and ash alluvial forest with endangered plant and animal species is protected.

The protected area lies near the left bank of the Dudváh, on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Vlčkovce and Majcichov. Vlčkovský háj is also home to a large number of snowdrops. These spring flowers add a seasonal note to the description of the alluvial forest, while its protected habitats are also home to endangered animal species.

Architecture, Art and Local History

The Church of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was built in 1930 to a design by the architect Michal Milan Harminc. It is a single-nave building with a transept and an asymmetrically positioned west tower; its exterior is inspired by Romanesque architecture. The present church stands on the site of an older church. Some sculptures and paintings from that predecessor were incorporated into the interior of the present church, bringing together the building’s own architecture and older works of art.

Fraňo Štefunko is also part of the local art history. The sculptor and visual artist, who was born in Vlčkovce, was awarded the title “National Artist” in 1968 in recognition of his life’s work. His works can be seen in places including the municipal office and the primary school; they include a statue of Peter Michal Bohúň.

Other buildings point to different chapters in the town’s history. The history of the Retzer family mill dates back to the 16th century. The former sugar factory complex in Vlčkovce dates from 1925. Vidiecky dom Vlčkovce was ceremonially opened and made accessible to the public on 6 October 2017. Together, these architectural and artistic landmarks give the town a history spanning older craft traditions to 20th-century architecture and visual art.
