Sobotište turns the spotlight on its Habán history: at the centre is a manor house dating from 1631, while a themed trail links other historic sites. There is also an observatory, a viewpoint and natural attractions around Sobotište.
Habán Heritage and Cultural Sites
The Nyáryovský Manor House is located in the centre of Sobotište and was built in 1631. It currently houses a museum. The themed “History of Sobotište” trail runs through the town centre and links the manor house with Habán monuments, religious buildings and the park behind the manor house. If you want to focus on the town’s history, this trail takes in several of these themes.
The Habán Museum is located in the Habán Court protected zone, in a reconstructed building: the Habán Mill. Its exhibition presents the history of the Anabaptist movement. The Habán community bought the mill in 1545; it was reconstructed between 2017 and 2020. Another historic building in the former Habán Court is the Habán Bell Tower, built in 1753 above a vaulted cellar.
Habán Court was declared a conservation area in 1999 and comprises around 70 buildings, including seven national cultural monuments. The religious buildings also offer distinct points of interest: the Evangelical Church was built in 1783–1784 as a Toleration church without a tower. The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and its grounds have been included in the Monuments Fund of the Slovak Republic.
The Samuel Jurkovič Cooperative Museum offers another historical perspective. It commemorates Samuel Jurkovič, who founded the first Gazdovský spolok (farmers’ association) in Slovakia. Together with the Habán Museum and the buildings along the town trail, it shows that Sobotište explores other aspects of local history as well as its Habán heritage.
Views, Nature and Cycling Route
The viewpoint below Ovčinec is about 460 metres above sea level. From there, you can see the surrounding landscape of the White Carpathians. The tourist shelter below Uchánok is about 516.4 metres above sea level and serves as a starting point and rest stop for nature outings around Sobotište. Both places offer a different focus from the historic sites in the centre.
The Sobotište Observatory is used for observing the sky and promoting astronomical knowledge in the region. It adds a distinct focus—astronomy—to the themes of cultural history and nature.
A route for cycle tourists is also described: the cross-border Vacenovice–Sobotište cycling route starts in Vacenovice and passes through Rúdník, Studienka Nedbalka, Račie údolie, Skalica, Radošovce, Chropov and Chvojnica before reaching Sobotište. When choosing between the two routes, their character is what matters: the themed trail links historic sites in the town centre, while the cycling route is a cross-border connection from Vacenovice through several towns and villages to Sobotište.
You can plan your stay around your preferred focus: Habán history and other cultural sites, nature outings or stargazing. The places and routes mentioned offer different themes, without needing to be combined into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
