Šaštín-Stráže combines an important pilgrimage site with a rich cultural heritage and the Gazárka recreation area. When choosing a destination, a practical question arises: should your stay focus mainly on religious history and the townscape, or would you also like to include paths and activities by the water? These themes are not mutually exclusive. The basilica, historic sites and lakes give the town several distinct highlights to explore.
Pilgrimage and the Basilica
The Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary is Slovakia’s national shrine. Construction of the present-day basilica began in 1736; in 1964, Pope Paul VI elevated the shrine to the status of a Basilica minor. These dates mark different milestones: the start of construction of the present-day building and its later elevation to Basilica minor status. Every year, thousands of worshippers from Slovakia and Moravia gather in Šaštín. Both the building’s history and an annual pilgrimage therefore shape the town’s religious character. Those who choose Šaštín-Stráže for its religious history will find not only a historic building here, but also a living pilgrimage tradition.
History in the Townscape
Šaštín’s central square has a triangular layout and several historic houses with ornate facades. The Calvary also stands out for its unusual location: it dates from the late 18th century and, unusually, stands on flat ground rather than on a hill. The synagogue dates from 1852 and is one of Slovakia’s older synagogues; its condition has deteriorated. One of the country’s largest Jewish monuments is located in the Jewish cemetery.
The former manor house is also part of the town’s history: it was where the first Hungarian textile manufactory, known as “Kartúnka,” was founded. Šaštín-Stráže’s cultural profile thus encompasses religious, Jewish and industrial heritage. Those interested in the town’s past can consider these different themes alongside the basilica’s architectural history when planning their trip.
Gazárka: Lakes, Trails and Activities
The Gazárka recreation area has five lakes, formed after sand extraction. The lakes have designated sandy beaches with gently sloping access to the water. Seasonal availability may vary. Pedal boats and boating are also available; these activities are seasonal too. The lakes’ origins and their present-day recreational use give Gazárka a different focus from the town’s religious and historic sites.
You can also explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike: forest roads and trails allow hikers and cyclists to discover sights nearby and farther afield. Fishing competitions are also held in the recreation area every year. Their dates may change, so check them if you are planning your visit specifically around a competition.
Cycling Route and When to Visit
A cycling route just under 3.5 kilometres long in Šaštín-Stráže leads from the Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary to a cycling route running along the Myjava River. It lies within the town’s cadastral area and was built and opened for use in 2021. Check the current route conditions before setting out on a specific ride.
Different schedules apply to the activities: worshippers’ gatherings and fishing competitions take place every year, while pedal boats and boating are seasonal. If one of these offerings is a deciding factor in your stay, check the specific dates or season in advance.
