Sokolovce lies on the left bank of the Váh, where its left-bank floodplain meets the southwestern part of the Považský Inovec mountains, about seven kilometres south of Piešťany. The town combines an accessible section of parkland with a rich architectural and local history. A guided trip on the Váh between Sokolovce and Hlohovec is also listed—another way to spend your time here besides exploring the town’s sights.

Landscape and Park

The Sĺňava reservoir forms a natural boundary of the municipality. Part of Sokolovce lies within the Sĺňava Natura 2000 protected area, a 691-hectare bird sanctuary with the designation SKCHVU026. It was established to protect aquatic habitats and breeding bird species. The protected area covers part of the municipality.

The renovated southwestern section of Sokolovce Park is open to the public and intended for recreation and outdoor activities. The castle grounds include a park with a pond, enhanced by David Horn. Protected rare trees grow there, including plane trees and two European beeches that are more than 200 years old. The park also has an educational trail, a restored pavilion, play equipment and an outdoor fitness area. Check local information about access and facilities before visiting.

Castle, Church and Local History

Sokolovce Castle is a Baroque-classical manor house dating from the mid-18th century. A tower was added in the second half of the 19th century. According to a heritage description updated in 2026, the castle is currently privately owned and in very poor condition; it formerly served as a psychiatric hospital. Check locally whether access is possible before visiting.

The originally Baroque Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built between 1768 and 1770. Above the entrance, a niche holds a Baroque statue of Our Lady of Sorrows dating from 1700 to 1706. The organ also has its own history: organ builder Ján Mocke made it in 1755. Around 1786, it probably came to Sokolovce from the Trinitarian monastery in Trnava after the monasteries were dissolved by Joseph II.

A Baroque Calvary group stands near the parish church. It is weathered and damaged; according to tradition, it was moved there from an original location that remains unknown. In the past, traditional church feasts in Sokolovce were marked by pilgrimages in honour of the local Virgin Mary, drawing pilgrims from the surrounding area. This description refers to the former tradition.

Archaeological traces of settlement in the municipality date back to the Early Stone Age. Finds from the Early Iron Age, including the La Tène period, have also been found in Sokolovce; a Germanic grave is dated to the 3rd century AD. These different periods give local history a long perspective, while the castle, church and Calvary group provide visible architectural and artistic landmarks.

On the Water or by Bike

A regionally listed guided trip follows the Váh between Sokolovce and Hlohovec. After a bus transfer from Hlohovec, participants travel to the starting point in Sokolovce. The itinerary includes registration, the distribution of water-sports equipment and boats, and a briefing before departure. The listed options are inflatable or plastic canoes, a raft and a paddleboard. Check dates and availability again before travelling.

For a bike ride, there is a 1.2-kilometre cycle path on Piešťanská Street. It was built in two stages in 2020 and 2021; check local route conditions before using it. The options are distinct: the cycle path is a short, clearly identified section in town, while the guided river trip involves a transfer and advance scheduling. When looking for an apartment in Sokolovce, these different day plans can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
