A walking trail of approximately 2,900 metres leads through the history of Beregseg–Šulekovo: the Šulekovský poznávací okruh has four stops and begins at the Šulek-Holuby Monument. Šulekovo also offers architectural landmarks, archaeological finds and cultural traditions, revealing the town through several distinct themes.
Layers of History in Šulekovo
The Šulek-Holuby Monument dates from 21 October 1928. Archaeological finds reach much further back: graves from a Hallstatt-period cremation cemetery were discovered in the cadastral area of Šulekovo. Evidence of a Slavic burial ground and a Slavic settlement dating from the 9th and 10th centuries was also found. This gives culture enthusiasts a broad historical perspective—from a precisely dated monument to finds from the Hallstatt period and the Early Middle Ages.
Church and Bridge
The Church of Christ the King in Šulekovo was built in 1935 to a design by architect Michal Milan Harminc. It is a three-nave building with a polygonal apse at the presbytery. The presbytery forms the altar area; its apse has multiple sides. The church is in good condition and is used for its intended purpose. If you wish to visit, check access in advance.
The Osloboditeľov Road Bridge in Šulekovo is also an immovable cultural monument, in the Secession style. The church and bridge offer different architectural points of interest: a sacred building with clearly defined architectural features on the one hand, and a road bridge in the Secession style on the other.
Cultural Traditions and Events
Over a period of 50 years, Mičková created programmes featuring authentic songs and stories that recorded the lives of ancestors in Šulekovo, formerly Bereseg, and the Hlohovec region. The Folklórna skupina Šulekovo also took part in this work. These cultural traditions complement the buildings and archaeological finds with songs and stories.
At the 14 February 2026 edition of Šulekovská fašiangová zabíjačka, visitors could sample traditional slaughter specialities, as well as mulled wine and hot tea, with the Folklórna skupina Šulekovo. If you are planning to attend a future event, check the event details.
Landscape and Cycling Connection
Šulekovo lies on the Váh’s floodplain deposits in the Danubian Lowland. This geographical setting connects the town with the river and a wider landscape, adding a geographical perspective to its cultural attractions.
A municipal infrastructure announcement dated 23 June 2026 mentions a 90-metre-long cycling link connecting Osloboditeľov and Priemyselná streets with the Váh flood-protection embankment. If you are relying on this link for your plans, check its current condition in advance.
