Horný Bar combines a location on the Danube island of Žitný ostrov with a cycle route, distinctive churches and a landscape shaped by waterways. Several aspects of the village are worth considering when planning your trip: its geographical position on the left bank of the Danube, the two branches of the International Danube Cycle Route, and historic buildings dating from different centuries.

Location and waterside landscape

Horný Bar lies on the left bank of the Danube, on the island of Žitný ostrov, which is surrounded by the Great and Little Danube branches. The supply canal of the Gabčíkovo Waterworks also runs through the municipality. Seepage channels run along its embankments. The Danube branches, supply canal and seepage channels are distinct features of the waterside landscape and help to put the area in geographical context.

The entire municipal area lies within the Žitný ostrov protected water-management area. This describes its water-management protection status, not a designated nature reserve. Botanically interesting marshlands have developed around the surviving oxbow lakes, meanders and sand dunes. Wet meadows and water basins are also among the landscape features where well-known plant species can be found.

Cycle route and connections

The International Danube Cycle Route has two branches in the Horný Bar area. Along the supply canal, it forms part of the EuroVelo 6 corridor. Near Horný Bar, a newly built bridge leads from the cycle route across the seepage channel into the municipality. If you plan to use this connection on your ride, check the condition of the bridge and the current route conditions in advance.

Regional buses also connect Horný Bar directly with Bratislava, Šamorín, Dunajská Streda and Gabčíkovo, as well as with surrounding municipalities. These connections may influence your choice of how to travel. Be sure to check the timetables separately for your specific travel date.

Churches and traces of history

Horný Bar is home to a parish church dedicated to Saint Stephen, King of Hungary. Built in 1778 in the Baroque-Classical style, it stands on the site of an earlier Gothic church and partly incorporates elements of it. Two stone tombstones dating from 1584 and 1606 are set into its walls. These dates point to older memorials, while the church itself represents a later phase of construction.

The village of Šuľany is home to the Church of Saint Anne. Its origins are Gothic and date to the early 14th century; it was altered in the 15th and 17th centuries and given a Baroque design in the 18th century. The single-nave interior ends at the sacristy, which has a polygonal apse. On the north side of the tower, the church also preserves an original keyhole-shaped loophole—a defensive feature that stands apart from the building’s later alterations.

The former castle of Šuľany is also part of the village’s history. The two-storey building had a square floor plan and a Late Renaissance style; it was probably built in the 17th century. It was later used as a monastery and converted into a granary in the 20th century. Only the walls of the original building remain today. Horný Bar was also once home to the four-towered castle of the Amadé family. According to some sources, Mátyás Bél wrote his historical works there.

Wetlands and wildlife

The landscape around Horný Bar is shaped not only by canals and agricultural land. Surviving oxbow lakes, meanders and sand dunes form the setting for botanically interesting marshlands, complemented by wet meadows and water basins. Waterbirds are a distinctive part of the wildlife around Horný Bar and on Žitný ostrov. The natural landscape thus brings together aquatic habitats and birdlife alongside the cultural history of churches and castles, without needing to combine these themes into a single route.
