Church history, preserved houses and a signposted cycling route give Kostolné Kračany a variety of highlights for a stay. The municipality is located in the Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina), in the central part of the Great Rye Island (Žitný ostrov). This clearly places the village in the lowland and on the island; its cultural sites and cycling route offer different ways to explore the area by theme.
Landscape and Protected Area
The cadastral area of Amadeho Kračany, part of the municipality, lies within the protected area of Konopiská. The area is subject to the fourth level of protection. This specific protected-area designation complements the broader setting in the Danubian Lowland and on the Great Rye Island. It is a distinct feature of the landscape around Kostolné Kračany, alongside its historical heritage and cycling opportunities.
Church History and Architecture
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Bartholomew (Kostol sv. Bartolomeja) was built in 1819–1820 on the site of an older church, mentioned as early as the 17th century. György Bartal commissioned the new building in the neoclassical style with Baroque elements; the church took on its present form in 1820. It is listed as an immovable national cultural monument under ÚZPF number 95/1.
Individual features of the church also reflect different chapters of its history. Above the main altar is a 19th-century painting titled “Ukrižovanie Pána Ježiša” (“The Crucifixion of Jesus”). Near the entrance, in the grounds of the present-day church, there is apparently a preserved stone baptismal font dating to the 13th century. The church grounds also contain the Lurdská jaskyňa, a Lourdes grotto. A monument to those who fell in the Second World War stands at the entrance to the church grounds.
The church’s significance extends beyond its architectural history: for many centuries, Kostolné Kračany was the religious centre of Kračansko. To this day, it remains a centre of religious life for residents of all twelve Kračany settlements. Those interested in church and historical heritage will therefore find not only a single building here, but also a connection to the regional community.
Traces in the Village and Community Life
The architectural heritage also includes old houses with pitched roofs thatched with reeds, which have been preserved in Kostolné Kračany. In Amadeho Kračany, the Bossányi family crypt is located in the cemetery area. By the municipal hall stands a statue, erected in 2022, of academic painter Róbert Almási (1948–2018), who was from the municipality.
Obecné dni is another part of community life. The festival is held every year in June and aims to strengthen solidarity and the identity of the Kračančania people. Exact dates and the programme vary; if the festival is important to your trip, check the latest dates before making plans.
Cycling and Planning Your Stay
The signposted Baka–Kostolné Kračany cycling route is 12.6 kilometres long, flat and suitable for all types of bicycles. Near Gabčíkovo, it connects to the International Danube Cycle Path. Surface and signage details may change, so it is a good idea to check both before setting off. The stated route length and connection to the cycle path provide a concrete basis for planning, without specifying a travel time.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: church history and local heritage, or a trip that also includes cycling. Obecné dni may also be a reason to include the June dates in your plans.
