Oslany lies at the transition between the Hornonitra Basin and the mountain regions of Vtáčnik, Tribeč and Strážovská hornatina. This offers a choice of different ways to spend your stay: forests and water, a longer hike or local history. The Church of St. Stephen the King (Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa) also provides a specific point of reference for the history of the town.
Landscape and Water Around Oslany
Forests cover more than half of Oslany’s cadastral area, covering 1,375 hectares. Part of the municipality’s territory belongs to the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. The landscape can also be understood through its waterways: the Nitra runs along the edge of the municipal territory from northeast to southwest. By contrast, the Slaný stream flows through Oslany and joins the Nitra in the western part of the municipality. This means a river along the edge of the territory and a stream running through the town sit side by side.
Buchlov Educational Trail: Route and Planning
The Buchlov Educational Trail is a linear hiking route intended for summer use. It can be walked independently and in either direction. The route is 5.3 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 400 meters and takes about three to four hours. This estimated duration makes it a substantial activity in its own right, which you can factor into your day’s plans.
The trail can be started in Osľany, Bystričany or Horná Ves. From there, it follows the ridge through the Buchlov Nature Reserve to Žarnov. Accessibility information is provided for all three places: the educational trail can be reached via SAD in Osľany, Bystričany or Horná Ves. Oslany is therefore one of several possible starting points, not the only one for this hike.
A Slovak double cross was erected at the summit of Žarnov in 2000. It is six meters high and four meters wide. The summit is thus marked by a specific structure whose year of construction and dimensions can be factored into planning a stay focused on hiking.
Church and Local History
The Church of St. Stephen the King (Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa) stands on Námestie slobody in Oslany. It was rebuilt again between 1756 and 1768; its style resembles the Baroque. In front of the church stands the Immaculate Mary Column. It dates from the second half of the 18th century and is listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments of Slovakia. The church and column offer different historical points of reference at a named location in the town.
The earlier development of the town center is also part of Oslany’s history. Originally, it was laid out architecturally as a linear village along a stream. The settlement later developed into a small town with a marketplace; a brewery was built there in the 18th century. This historical sequence complements the landscape and educational trail with a distinct local dimension, without making any claims about the brewery’s present-day use.
Considering Oslany as a Place to Stay
For choosing a place to stay, the educational trail provides a specific but not exclusive point of reference: Oslany is one of three possible starting points, alongside Bystričany and Horná Ves. Consider whether Oslany suits the focus of your planned trip, and compare specific hotels using the criteria that matter to you.
