When looking for a hotel in Kanianka, it is worth first deciding what you would like to focus on: would you prefer a stay shaped by activities at the reservoir, or are you particularly interested in churches, a chapel and local history? The village offers these different aspects as starting points for planning your trip.

Water, activity and landscape

Swimming and various water sports are possible at the Kanianka Reservoir. The surrounding area is also suitable for cycling, running and walking. This gives you a choice between activities on the water and getting active in the surrounding area. You can take into account which of these is most important for your trip when choosing a destination and accommodation.

To the west of Kanianka, Malá Magura rises steeply; it is part of the Strážovské vrchy mountain range. The Kaniansky dvojkríž stands at the highest point of the cadastral area of the municipality of Kanianka. These are two distinct geographical features: the mountain range lies west of the village, while the cross is defined by its position at the highest point of the cadastral area.

Churches and their history

In the village centre stands the Roman Catholic parish church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the main church of the Kanianka parish and is distinguished by a freestanding bell tower, separate from the church building. John Paul II blessed the foundation stone on 22 April 1990; construction began in May 1992, and the church was consecrated on 7 November 1993.

The Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is also among Kanianka’s significant historic religious buildings. It was built in 1902 thanks to Štefan Baláž; the first Holy Mass was held there on 14 September of the same year. The construction of the parish church and the earlier chapel thus mark different periods in the local history of religious buildings.

Religious sites and Mass times

At the foot of the hill above the new cemetery is the Kanianka Way of the Cross, a quiet place of prayer with fourteen stations marked by large stones. It was created in 2020. If you would like to visit the Way of the Cross, check its condition locally.

Holy Mass is currently celebrated in the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Saturdays: weekly in summer and once a month in winter. As the frequency varies with the season, check the current Mass times before your visit.

Settlement and local traditions

Kanianka’s original settlement centre, “stara Kanianka,” lies in the valley of the Kanianskeho potoka. Traditional linear development along the stream remains to this day. This means the village centre can be understood through its settlement pattern as well as through individual buildings.

Some women residents describe a distinctive Kanianka embroidery with floral motifs, made in chain stitch or as filled embroidery. Earlier generations wore traditional costume mainly on festive occasions, such as weddings or church visits. Embroidery and traditional costume add craft and festive clothing to the history of the village.

Getting there

Kanianka can be reached via third-class roads through Bojnice or Nedožery-Brezany. Check the route and road conditions before setting off, as both can change.
