Jalovec brings together several themes for an exploratory trip: church architecture and remembrance, historic crafts and traces of earlier industry. There are also two watercourses, a small meadow in Jalovské Lazy at an altitude of over 800 m, and a cycling route that passes through the village. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether local history or the combination of landscape and cycling should shape your stay. The places and dates below bring these themes into focus.

Church and Remembrance in the Village

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Kostol Božského srdca Ježišovho) was built in 1927 in the Historicist style, with Neoclassical and Neo-Romanesque elements. Originally, it served as a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary; it was consecrated again on 27 September 1992. The two dates mark different stages in its history: its construction and its later reconsecration.

Next to the church stands a monument to those who fell in the Second World War. The history of the church building and the war memorial are therefore right beside one another. For your own trip planning, these offer two different points of interest: architecture and religious history on the one hand, and remembrance of the war on the other.

Crafts and Earlier Industry

The craft traditions can also be placed in a historical timeline. In the 16th century, they included woven brooms. In the mid-19th century, shingles and rings made from birch wood were produced; later, shepherds’ vessels, Fujara flutes and pipes were part of the traditions. The sequence thus spans woven items, products made from birch wood and other crafts and musical instruments. It adds another perspective on life in earlier Jalovec to the history of its buildings.

A specific point of reference for the area’s industrial history lies in Huňov Forest, within the municipality of Jalovec. There, the Pálffys built a glassworks with five melting furnaces in 1749–1750. Traces of the foundations and shards of glass remain at the former site; the glassworks itself no longer exists. Jalovec also has stone granaries from the 19th century, and the remains of the Pálffy Mill are still visible. The glassworks, granaries and mill represent different historical traces and can be distinguished as such.

Partisan History and Cycling Route

The partisan bunker on Humnište was built in 1944 as accommodation for the Slovan Ráztočno partisan unit. In 2014, on the 70th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising, it was restored and opened to the public. Please check the current access arrangements in advance of your visit.

Jalovec is also on the 11.6 km Nedožery–Brezany–Malá Čausa–Chrenovec–Jalovec–Ráztočno–Remata cycling route. The stated length refers to the entire route; Jalovec is one place along it. This provides a specific connection between the village and cycling, without implying a separate route length for Jalovec.

Plan Your Visit and Journey

The Handlovka and the Jalovský potok flow through Jalovec. Another distinctive feature of the landscape is Jalovské Lazy: they lie within the municipality at an altitude of over 800 m and include a small meadow. These details add two different landscape features to the local history: the watercourses in the village and the meadow at a higher elevation.

The official ŽSR timetable for line 145 lists a stop named Jalovec. Timetable information can change, so check the service for your travel date before setting out. This allows you to plan your trip around what matters to you: the historic sites, the cycling route or Jalovec’s landscapes.
