A regional cycling loop runs through Veľké Kršteňany; the town’s history dates back to a Neolithic settlement confirmed by archaeological evidence. The area also has local memorial sites, a chapel with a festival tradition that is still observed today, and evidence of historical everyday culture. This gives travellers different options to focus on: cycling, cultural history, and insights into regional ways of life.

Memorial Sites and Religious History

The memorial room of Pavol Gašparovič Hlbina opened on 18 May 2008 in the building of the former state elementary school. Another specific date in local history is marked by the Medzicesty stone cross in the cadastral area of Veľké Kršteňany: it was blessed on 2 February 1930. The two sites represent different forms of remembrance—a memorial room in a former school building and a stone cross with a precisely dated blessing.

Regular Sunday services were held in the Chapel of Saint Catherine until the new church was built. Today, too, the faithful gather in the chapel for services on the feast of Saint Catherine. The chapel’s history therefore encompasses both its former regular use on Sundays and services on the feast day. The branch church “Kostol sv. Cyrila a Metóda,” built in 2002, provides a separate point of reference.

Early Settlement and Historic Townscape

An archaeologically documented Neolithic settlement has been identified in the area of Veľké Kršteňany. The historic local architecture was characterised by an irregular settlement pattern following a stream and farmhouses built of unfired bricks. These are two distinct features of earlier living environments: the layout of the settlement along a stream and the building material used for traditional farmhouses. Together with the evidence of a Neolithic settlement, this offers a perspective ranging from an early archaeological period to a later rural building tradition.

The Bojnický Cycling Circuit

The blue-marked regional loop, “Bojnický cyklookruh” (Route 2308), passes through Veľké Kršteňany. It is 162 kilometres long and can be completed in two days. Its length and stated duration make it an option for a multi-day cycling trip and provide a clear basis for planning. Signage or the route may change, so check the route details before setting off.

Poetry and Traditional Cuisine

The regional event “Hlbinove Kršteňany” was established in October 2008. The festival is designed as a regional celebration of Slovak poetry and includes a competition in poetry recitation. Spoken poetry is therefore another cultural theme of the town, alongside its architectural and religious heritage.

Traditional local cuisine often included halušky, plum dumplings, perky filled with plum butter, and šúľance with poppy seeds. These dishes add another perspective to the town’s history: they show which foods were part of traditional culinary culture, while the memorial room, chapel, and architecture mainly illustrate its built and religious history.

Geological History of the Region

There is a geological site in the Horná Nitra region near Veľké Kršteňany. Its marine microorganisms and rock layers have been used to reconstruct the development of ancient seas in the Carpathian region over a period of 25 million years. The connection to the sea is geological: the layers and microorganisms offer a long-term perspective on former marine environments. Together with the evidence of a Neolithic settlement, this provides a timeline stretching from early settlement in the local area to the development of seas in the Carpathian region.
