In Žabokreky Nad Nitrou, buildings and archaeological traces tell stories of different eras. There are also guided farm and brewery visits, as well as a cycling route that reaches the village. This makes it easy to plan a stay around a particular interest: local history, a planned experience at Farma u Ďurkových, or a longer bike ride.
The village lies in the northeastern part of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina, on the right-bank floodplain and terrace of the Nitra River. There is a railway station in the village; the single-track railway line No. 140 towards Nové Zámky–Nitra–Prievidza runs through Žabokreky Nad Nitrou. Before travelling, check whether passenger services are currently operating.
Church, Manor House and Mausoleum
Archaeological finds provide evidence of settlement in the present-day area as early as the Stone Age and later in the 7th and 8th centuries. During the Great Moravian period, local blacksmiths made complete sets of agricultural tools.
A prominent building is the Church of Our Lady. Built in 1913, the Secessionist church replaced a demolished Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. Its single-nave design combines Renaissance and Neo-Romanesque elements with Secessionist styling. The presbytery has a polygonal end, and side chapels complement the floor plan. The interior furnishings also date from the time of construction. After the church was built, the village square was redesigned; well-known cattle markets were subsequently held there—a historical reference, not a description of a regular market today.
The fortified manor house was originally a Gothic watchtower built around 1320 and was converted into a residence in the 20th century. Two phases of earthen fortifications are broadly dated to the 11th to 13th centuries and the 14th to 16th centuries. The western part of the outer fortification, with its moat, has survived. The manor house is now a residence.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the mausoleum is a Secessionist monument whose design was inspired by Oriental architecture. Its architecture and interior furnishings have been authentically preserved. A path branching off from the main route leads through an original avenue of yew trees to the mausoleum. If you would like to visit the interior, check access in advance.
Guided Farm Visits and Beer
Farma u Ďurkových organizes guided farm tours for groups of at least eight people. Visitors can see the farm animals. Ask about booking conditions for your preferred date. You can also learn about the brewery on a guided tour, which ends with a beer tasting. The U Ďurkových bistro features a wide selection of house-brewed beers; the farm produces unfiltered, unpasteurized beer.
The farm café has a green terrace overlooking the farm and operates seasonally. Before your visit, check whether it will be open on your chosen date. Every summer, Farma also runs a one-day holiday camp for children. They learn about animal care and sustainable living and take part in creative activities. Check availability for the year you have in mind.
Cycling and the Žabokreky Tour
The Hornonitrianska, also known as the Ponitrianska cycling route, is 66 kilometres long in total and reaches Žabokreky Nad Nitrou. Before that, it passes through Bojnice, Nováky and Partizánske. Its total length helps you gauge it as a longer cycling route, while the places mentioned provide an indication of its course.
The Žabokreky Tour is an annual cycling event. Check the dates for the edition you want to attend separately. The 2026 rules describe a non-competitive format: no times are recorded and no rankings are produced. The event format also includes a 1,200-metre children’s route and a subsequent programme of activities for children. This format may change from one edition to another.
