Malé Kršteňany combines sacred architectural history with landscape features and two different routes: a hike through several named stops and a cycling route along the Nitra River. The church, chapel and archaeological traces of early settlement offer a long historical perspective; the flora and the Veľký vrch Nature Reserve add a natural perspective. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether cultural history, nature or both should shape your stay.
Church, chapel and local history
The Gothic church Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie originally dates from the 14th century. The surviving features of the original church include the perimeter masonry and a late Gothic stone pastophorium with three turrets. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The chapel Kaplnka Panny Márie offers a different historical note with its Baroque origins: its depiction on a military map from 1782 to 1784 confirms this classification. The chapel is in very good condition and also continues to serve its religious purpose. Here, two different architectural periods can be considered separately in the church and chapel.
The history of the municipal area also extends far beyond these sacred buildings. Archaeological traces in the area of the present-day municipality date from the Neolithic period to the La Tène–Dacian settlement. These include Neolithic and Eneolithic settlement evidence, Bronze Age graves and fortified sites, as well as a La Tène–Dacian settlement. This chronological span places early settlement alongside the religious architecture built later. The municipal seal offers another cultural detail: it depicts a crowned Virgin Mary holding a sceptre and the infant Jesus in her arms. In addition to agriculture, basket weaving was also part of the traditional way of life.
Landscape and nature conservation
The area around Malé Kršteňany is home to a mix of heat- and drought-loving species of the Pannonian flora and Carpathian species from the foothills and mountains. The Veľký vrch Nature Reserve covers 47.6 hectares and was designated in 1967. It protects heat-loving plant and animal communities; some species reach the northern limit of their range there. If you are planning a visit to the reserve, check the current rules in advance.
Hiking route, cycling and travel
A popular cycling route follows a paved road along the Nitra River below Veľký vrch. The surface and route may change, so check the current route and surface conditions before setting out. A route description dated 9 January 2023 lists a hike from Malé Kršteňany via Veľký vrch, Terešný vrch, Cininova lúka, Veľké Kršteňany, Skačany and Varty to Dolné Vestenice. The route description also mentions Partizánske, with train and bus connections, and Malé Kršteňany, with a bus connection, as possible starting points or destinations. Check the trail conditions and access locally, as well as current timetables, before travelling.
The two routes differ in their course: the cycling route follows the Nitra River below Veľký vrch, while the hike takes in a series of named places. This comparison can help you decide what kind of excursion to include in your travel plans.
