Route 17 leads to Hrachovište, which is also located in the foothills of the Little Carpathians below the summit of Plešivec. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (“Kostol Návštevy Panny Márie”) adds a distinctive architectural-historical feature. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Hrachovište, first consider whether a longer hike or the landscape and local history will shape your stay. Travel by train should also be planned early, as there is no direct connection.

Location and geological features

Hrachovište lies in a valley where the Jablonka and Turanka streams meet. The area has a varied geological composition and complex structural features. It contains underground cavities and fossils of marine animals. Together with its location below Plešivec, these features give the surroundings a distinctive geological character. For travellers interested in the nature of a landscape as well as hiking, this offers a different focus from the route itself.

Route 17 and its trail features

Route 17 runs from Nové Mesto nad Váhom through Višňové and Čachtice Castle to Hrachovište. It is 18 km long, moderately difficult, has 650 metres of elevation gain and takes about five hours. This approximate duration makes it possible to plan the hike as a substantial block of time. Check route conditions before setting out. From Veľký Plešivec, Route 17 descends through rocky cliffs to Hrachovište. It also follows the Jablonka stream and crosses a body of water via a new covered wooden bridge. The details on distance, elevation gain and duration give you several ways to factor the hike into your travel plans.

Church and local history

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (“Kostol Návštevy Panny Márie”) was built between 1750 and 1756 as a single-nave church. Its layout includes a polygonal-ended presbytery, an attached sacristy and a projecting tower. The presbytery is the chancel; its polygonal shape refers to its many-sided end. The main altar is Late Baroque, with Empire-style elements from the early 19th century. At its centre is a polychrome relief of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.

A local legend connects the name Hrachovište and the three roses on the municipal coat of arms with King Matthias and pea porridge. The history of local crafts also extends beyond church architecture: basket weaving was once common in Hrachovište alongside farming. After 1918, residents supplemented their traditional occupations by making hemp linen. Thus, a local legend and historical crafts sit alongside the church’s distinctive architecture and altar style.

Travelling by train

Hrachovište railway station is not in operation; trains nevertheless stop there, and tickets are bought from the conductor. There is no direct train connection to Hrachovište: at Nové Mesto nad Váhom, you need to change to the Nové Mesto–Trenčín line. Check connections and operating details before departure. When planning your stay, you can therefore consider the train journey and the roughly five-hour route as separate parts of your decision to visit Hrachovište.
