Moravské Lieskové offers different ways to explore culture and nature: traditional women’s folk dress and the churches tell different chapters of the village’s history, while ŽiTo v SÝPKE brings together nature-based educational activities. There are also flower-filled meadows and opportunities to meet people around local food. When planning your visit, it is especially helpful to decide whether you want to focus on architectural history, folk culture, nature education or regional produce.

Traditional Dress, Collections and Architectural History

The Museum of Folk Creativity displays folk clothing, traditional dress, tools and written memorabilia. Textiles, work implements and written records are brought together in the collection. A distinctive part of local folk culture is the traditional women’s folk dress of Moravské Lieskové. It evolved from clothing originally made entirely of hemp and comprised a rubáč, kasánka, apron, sleeves, bonnet and boots. The different components offer a tangible insight into the traditional clothing customs.

The churches also tell two different stories of architecture. The Evangelical church was built in 1786 without a tower. The organ was added during Pastor J. Lacka’s tenure; the tower was not added until 1892. The Catholic church’s original construction and its present-day appearance are further apart in time: it was originally built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. The present-day church is Neo-Romanesque and was consecrated in 1912. Only part of the tower’s surrounding wall remains from the original Catholic church. Thus, a gradually expanded Evangelical church stands alongside the history of a Catholic building later given a Neo-Romanesque character.

Another historic building stands in the center of the village. It was formerly a chair house, was later purchased by the Evangelical church and used as a parsonage. The local cultural heritage also includes reconstructed vernacular buildings, the folk architecture of the Kopanice region and water-powered log mills. The local brass band tradition has also been documented since 1908.

Nature, Education and Local Food

Most of the area of Moravské Lieskové lies within the Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Biele Karpaty). The flower-filled meadows above the Šance settlement are a particular botanical highlight. Several orchid species grow there, along with extensive stands of grass-leaved iris (Iris graminea) and the rare common adder’s-tongue (Ophioglossum vulgatum).

Nature, art and knowledge-sharing come together at the ŽiTo v SÝPKE educational and community center. The nature garden offers visitors the chance to pick fresh fruit, explore a straw-bale maze and relax in a therapeutic garden. Alongside cultural topics, practical experiences in nature are also part of the center’s program.

There are experiential programs for school classes and groups that combine nature-based activities with learning new skills. School programs include kneading dough together and baking bread snakes over a fire. Environmental education programs take place inside the center, in the nature garden and in the orchard. If you are planning a group activity, it is best to arrange specific dates directly with the center.

TRH Sýpka has a different focus: local food, the work of local producers and community gatherings. Visitors can sample homemade specialties and talk with farmers, gardeners and craftspeople. While the churches, traditional dress and folk architecture draw attention to cultural history, the focus here is on regional produce and meeting the people behind it.
