There are several possible focuses for a trip to Modrová: nature, cycling and architecture. The Kňaží vrch Nature Reserve is part of the Považský Inovec, and the MTB route 5213 runs mostly through forest terrain. The Kyselka mineral spring is located in the Kalište recreation area in Modrová; the Church of St. Michael the Archangel adds a distinctive architectural feature. If you are considering Modrová as a place to stay, these themes can help you choose the focus of your getaway. Be sure to plan separately for the access restrictions at Modrovská Cave.
Kňaží vrch: Forest and Nature Reserve
The Kňaží vrch Nature Reserve protects thermophilous oak forests with downy oaks (Quercus pubescens), which, together with treeless rocky areas, support the presence of xerothermic flora and fauna in the Považský Inovec. Carpathian species are also found on the northern slopes. Kňaží vrch is part of the Tematínske vrchy Site of European Importance. Observe the applicable conservation regulations in the protected area. The description of the natural environment thus links warm, sun-loving habitats and open rocky areas with the additional presence of species on the northern slopes.
Cave and Mineral Spring
Modrovská Cave is the largest cave in the Považský Inovec; its entrance lies on the north-western slope of the Grnica massif at an altitude of 523 m. Inside are characteristic pisolitic sinter formations, including a variety of bush-like shapes reminiscent of underwater corals. The cave is closed to the general public; visits are possible only when accompanied by members of the Inovec cave group. Check this access requirement before planning a visit.
The Kyselka mineral spring is located in the Kalište recreation area in Modrová. If you wish to drink the water, check the condition of the spring and the water quality on site beforehand. This makes the mineral spring a distinct local feature, while the cave’s restricted access is a key consideration for planning.
Mountain Biking Through Forest Terrain
The green-marked MTB route 5213 runs from Hubina via Gonove Lazy to Horáreň Modrová. It goes mostly through forest terrain and connects at its end with the red route 020, “Across the Považský Inovec,” through the Považský Inovec. When choosing a route, the named places along route 5213 and its connection to the red route are both useful reference points. As the route may change depending on forestry or trail conditions, check its course and connection before setting out.
Church Architecture in Detail
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Modrová is listed in the Central Register of the Monuments Fund of the Slovak Republic under number 1253/0. Its presbytery stands on square foundations and has a barrel vault. A small sacristy is connected to the sanctuary by a flat Gothic trefoil portal. The sacristy has one Romanesque and one Gothic narrow window; both are only 10 to 15 cm wide. The presbytery’s foundations and vault are its main features, while the sacristy is notable for its connection to the sanctuary and its windows. This clear distinction makes the architectural forms a subject in their own right alongside the nature and cycling opportunities.
