Kapušany offers several distinct highlights to choose from: Kapušiansky hrad castle and its ascent routes, the centrally located Church of St. Martin, and the cultural and sporting activities in Park svätých Cyrila a Metoda. You can plan your visit around the castle hill, local history or the park’s activities.
Castle and landscape
The ruins of Kapušiansky hrad castle are a national cultural monument. Its ground plan is predominantly rectangular and comprises an upper castle and an outer bailey. The site is freely accessible, and admission is free. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the current conditions shortly before your visit.
Two routes lead to the castle: one is longer and less strenuous, while the other is shorter and more strenuous. This gives you a clear choice between route length and difficulty. Route conditions may change seasonally, so check the route locally before setting off. A green-marked trail also leads from Kapušany railway station to the castle and is 2.3 km long.
The castle stands at an elevation of 504 m in the Kapušiansky hradný vrch nature reserve. This 18.1 ha area contains an important botanical site on volcanic rocks. The castle is also located within the SKUEVO322 Fintické svahy Natura 2000 site, which is home to rare animal species of European importance and rare plant species.
A guided ascent passes eight stations on the castle hill. Interactive features may depend on local maintenance and availability.
Church and local history
The Church of St. Martin (Kostol sv. Martina) is in the centre of Kapušany and is also a national cultural monument. This Neoclassical building incorporates construction remains from an older church. The new church was solemnly consecrated and dedicated to St. Martin on 2 November 1798, his feast day. Alongside the castle, it offers a distinct way to explore the history of the village, focusing on its architectural style, the remains of the earlier church and the date of its consecration.
The Kapušianske folklórne dni festival is also part of the village’s cultural history: it was held for the 21st time in 2026. This refers to the 2026 edition and is not information about future dates.
Educational trail and park activities
A description in the 2023 municipal magazine places the information panels for the “Velikáni kapušianskych dejín” educational trail in Park svätých Cyrila a Metoda. The trail introduces selected prominent figures from Kapušany’s history and important places in the municipality, including the castle, church and manor house. The panels also feature ergonomic play elements, such as memory games and puzzles, for children and people with disabilities.
The park offers other practical details to help you plan your visit: its covered amphitheatre has seating for 1,000 visitors. The park also has an asphalt sports court with artificial lighting. It is used for basketball, tennis and football, as well as ice skating and ice hockey in winter. The park therefore offers both a venue for events and space for a range of sports.
At the castle, visitors can take guided tours, try archery and coin minting, watch blacksmithing and pottery demonstrations, and sample medieval cuisine. The visitor programme may vary depending on the season or event. If you are interested in the castle, you can choose between exploring the historic monument, the activities on the castle hill and the seasonally changing programme.
Plan your journey
Kapušany has good bus connections, and it is also possible to travel by train. Check the current timetables for your travel dates. The green-marked route from the railway station to the castle is 2.3 km long. The two described ascent routes differ in length and difficulty; take this difference and local conditions into account when planning your visit.
