In Prešov, discovery lies in the contrasts: a Moorish-style synagogue stands alongside Gothic and Baroque buildings, while Solivar tells the technical history of salt production. Those interested in culture will find different ways to explore the city's history; trails through wooded areas add a different dimension.

Gothic Traces and Churches from Several Eras

The buildings in the historic center of Prešov are part of the city's urban monument reserve. A special place is held by the Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša: it is the only preserved Gothic religious building in Prešov. The Caraffova väznica is also one of the few preserved Gothic monuments in the city, but today serves a different purpose: it is a municipal gallery. In this way, Gothic architecture in Prešov can be encountered both in a religious context and in today's cultural setting.

The Chrám Svätej Trojice offers a different perspective. The Renaissance church is one of the few Protestant churches built during the Reformation. Its crypt contains the remains of 17 Jesuit monks and their superior. By contrast, the Chrám Svätého Jána Krstiteľa is defined by its Baroque appearance today: the building was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century. Together, these buildings do not represent a single era, but rather different historical and architectural layers.

Synagogue and City History

The Orthodox Synagogue of Prešov was built in 1898 in the Moorish style. Today, it is the only functioning synagogue in Prešov. The Mestské múzeum Synagóga offers guided tours of a Judaica exhibition in the Orthodox Synagogue. If you plan to take one of these tours, check the venue's current visitor information in advance.

The Rákociho palác also combines a historic building with a present-day cultural offering: it houses the Krajské múzeum. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of Prešov. If you prefer to explore the city's history through a museum rather than individual buildings, this offers a suitable thematic introduction.

Salt History in Solivar

Solivar is a national cultural monument and a unique complex of technical facilities for extracting and boiling salt from brine. The facilities date back to the 17th century. Solivar thus adds another chapter to the history of the churches and the city: the focus here is on the technology of salt production. A guided tour of the museum complex takes about 90 minutes. This approximate duration can help you plan the visit as a separate part of your day.

Forest Trails and Outdoor Activities

You can also explore Prešov on nature trails. The Tri Jarky nature trail leads from the Za Kalváriou area to Malkovská hôrka and is intended for hikers and cyclists. The Kvašná voda educational trail runs through Cemjata Forest Park, a suburban area of Prešov, and has nine information stations.

At Malý Borkút, a forestry educational trail runs for 500 metres through easy terrain and is also suitable for families with children. For cycling enthusiasts, the Prešov Singletrack network offers a different scale: it comprises eight routes of varying difficulty, with a total length of about 20 kilometres. At 500 metres and with easy terrain, the educational trail at Malý Borkút is the shorter option; the Singletrack network offers cyclists considerably more variety in routes.

Local Cuisine in the City Center

The Prešov Street Food Festival brings local and international cuisine, as well as food trucks, to the city center. If you include the festival in your plans, check the current event dates; dates and participating vendors may change.
