Šalgovce combines a castle dating from 1760 with a Jewish cemetery, a pilgrimage tradition and a long nature trail in the Považský Inovec. This offers two clearly distinct interests for planning a trip: local architectural and cultural history, and a self-guided route that is about 60 kilometres long, including its branches through the municipalities. There is also a religious event held every year in June. When choosing Šalgovce, you can decide whether the historical sites or the nature trail should shape your stay.

Castle and Architectural History

Šalgovce Castle was built in 1760 in the Baroque-Classical style and is listed as a cultural monument. The castle has a courtyard and a garden. The date and the style provide two distinct points of reference for understanding the building: one chronological and one architectural. An old, rare bell tower with a bell adds another independent piece of evidence to the architectural history of the area. Together, these details offer a cultural-historical perspective that goes beyond the castle’s architecture.

Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish cemetery of Šalgovce lies at the edge of the village. Between 20 and 100 flat 19th-century gravestones remain in their original locations there. They are made of marble and sandstone and bear inscriptions in Hebrew and German. Their flat shape, the different materials and the two written languages are visible and legible features of the cemetery. The route to the cemetery crosses a field and passes through a damaged wall with no gate. Before visiting, check whether this access route is currently usable.

Považský Inovec Nature Trail

The Považský Inovec nature trail begins in the southern part of the mountain range, in the territory of Šalgovce. The route is self-guided and linear, and is intended for use in both summer and winter. Including its branches through the municipalities, it is about 60 kilometres long. Its approximate total length and linear course make it a different undertaking from visiting individual local architectural sites. When planning your trip, you can treat the nature trail as a distinct focus: it means choosing a longer, self-guided route rather than focusing solely on local cultural history.

Chapel and Pilgrimage

The Roman Catholic Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands in the cemetery in Šalgovce. Every year in June, a pilgrimage travels from the parish church in Ardanovce to the chapel, where a Mass is then celebrated. If you would like to combine your trip with the pilgrimage, check the exact date in advance. The annual event in June differs from the nature trail, which is intended for use in both summer and winter: the pilgrimage is a recurring occasion, while the nature trail is a route option available across a broader range of seasons.

Historical Wine Production

Historically, the inhabitants of Šalgovce were engaged in wine production. This aspect adds an economic tradition to the architectural and religious history and broadens the perspective on the village’s past beyond its buildings and religious sites.
