Ardanovce lies in a stream valley on the edge of the Nitrianska pahorkatina, below the Považský Inovec mountain range. Two aspects stand out in particular for travellers: the surrounding forests and the opportunities they offer for recreation, and traces of the area’s long history. These include a prehistoric settlement site between Ardanovce and Šalgovce, as well as the Church of Saint Michael and the rectory directly next to it, whose construction dates span different eras.

Landscape and educational trail

The surrounding forests are ideal for recreation, walks and relaxation. Mushroom picking is another use of these forests. The nature theme ranges from peaceful stays in the forest to a longer hiking option: the Náučný chodník Považský Inovec runs through the cadastral area of Ardanovce.

The educational trail is self-guided and branched, with ten branches, and can be walked in either direction throughout the year. Including the municipal branches, it is approximately 60 kilometres long. The ten branches describe its structure, while the approximate 60 kilometres refer to the total length of the trail, including its branches. This makes it possible to distinguish the size of the entire educational trail from that of a single section.

Archaeological traces

A prehistoric settlement with pottery fragments has been documented on the left terrace of a stream between Ardanovce and Šalgovce. The finds also include stone tools and traces of structures. The settlement dates from the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods. Pottery and stone tools thus sit alongside structural traces: the different groups of finds offer distinct insights into the same prehistoric settlement site. Its attribution to two periods also places the settlement within a timeframe that extends beyond a single historical date.

Church and rectory

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Michael is an important Late Gothic architectural monument dating from 1503. The church preserves a stone holy water stoup from the 15th century, decorated with a mascaron. A mascaron is a mask-like decorative motif; this detail adds a specific design feature to the view of the church.

The rectory stands directly beside the church. It was built in 1787 and remodelled in the Neoclassical style in 1804. The dates mark different construction phases: 1787 refers to its construction, and 1804 to its later remodelling. The Late Gothic church and the Neoclassically remodelled rectory thus represent different periods in Ardanovce’s architectural history. The church is the older building.
