Čermany combines a rich local history with religious buildings and a protected wetland. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie), a cemetery chapel with three underground sarcophagi and several memorials provide tangible points of reference for the town’s history. At the same time, the municipality lies in the Nitrianska pahorkatina hills, and the Perkovský potok flows through Čermany.

Church and architectural history

In the southern part of Čermany, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie) stands on a small rise that slopes upward to the west. It is visible from every part of the municipality and serves as a landmark in the townscape. The Neoclassical church originated as a Renaissance building. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1760 and renovated in 1813. A Renaissance wall with keyhole-shaped loopholes has been preserved around the church. Architectural styles from different periods thus meet here. The floor plan is single-nave; the presbytery has a polygonal end, a sacristy is attached, and the tower is set forward. “Single-nave” describes a building with one nave; the polygonal end of the presbytery refers to the multi-sided shape of this part of the church. These details make the difference between the original Renaissance church, the Baroque remodelling and the Neoclassical building easier to understand.

Settlement history of Čermany

Archaeological evidence of settlement in Čermany dates back to the 8th century. The oldest written mention of the town dates from 1257, when its name was recorded as “CHERMEN”. One historical interpretation also sees the settlement as a military and trading station on a Roman road in the Germanic hinterland. Between 1857 and 1861, German residents from Hanover and Oldenburg moved to Čermany. The municipality was settled by farmers from northern Germany who made wooden shoes, cleared forests and farmed the land. Čermany thus combines early traces of settlement and a medieval record of its name with a later wave of settlement and the associated crafts and farming activities.

Chapel, sculptures and memorials

The cemetery chapel Kaplnka Zmŕtvychvstalého dates from 1892. Its underground rooms contain three sarcophagi. A Late Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from the late 18th century. In 1868, Štefan Laluch and his wife erected a Late Neoclassical column with a roadside sculpture of the Holy Trinity. The chapel, statue and column represent different forms of religious remembrance in the town. In the town centre, a statue of the Sacred Heart with a sculpture of Christ at its centre was erected on 3 June 1932. The names of all the soldiers who fell in the First World War are commemorated on the monument.

Landscape and protected wetland

Čermany lies in the central part of the Nitrianska pahorkatina hills. The Perkovský potok flows through the municipality. The 5.45-hectare Čermiansky močiar wetland is also located within the cadastral area of Čermany. It is subject to the fifth level of protection and falls under the jurisdiction of the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Ponitrie). This marshy habitat is ecologically and educationally significant and is home to protected animal species. Alongside the architectural and local history, it therefore represents a distinct natural and conservation focus.
