Šaľa lies on both banks of the lower Váh and stretches across a fertile plain in the lowlands. The river and the plain create distinct landscape features: the Váh as a geographical line and the lowlands as the landscape setting. The town is in a warm climate zone, with an average of 50 summer days per year.

Market History and Transport Routes

The first written mention of Šaľa dates back to 1002. An important turning point came in 1536, when King Ferdinand I granted the town market-town status through a charter of privileges. This gave Šaľa the right to hold weekly markets and two annual fairs. The charter links a specific historical date with a new status and the associated market rights.

Transport routes are also part of Šaľa’s history. The town lay at the crossroads of the so-called Česká cesta and the road from Nitra to Bratislava. The construction of the railway line between Vienna and Budapest contributed to the development of Šaľa in 1850. The crossroads and railway construction thus represent different transport connections in the town’s history.

Buildings and Places of Remembrance

The building now known as the Renesančný kaštieľ was originally a water castle. It was built in the 16th century, probably on older foundations; at the same time, the building is a faithful copy of the Turzo family palace in Veľká Bytča. Both its original function as a water castle and its specific architectural model are important to understanding it.

The Neoclassical Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch was built between 1828 and 1837 on the site of an older church. The Roľnícky dom dates from 1730 and is a protected cultural monument. In Šaľa’s square, the Holy Trinity ensemble, erected in 1895, commemorates the 1886 ball lightning strike that hit the tower of the local church. These landmarks reveal different aspects of the town’s history: church architecture, a protected house and the memory of a specific event.

Folklore and Cycling Route

The folklore ensemble FS Šaľan offers a different cultural perspective. Founded in 2015, it operates under MsKS Šaľa in the town of Šaľa. The ensemble performs dances at cultural and social events. If you are interested in folklore as well as architectural history, dance offers a distinct way to explore it.

The 1,565-metre Šaľa–Diakovce cycle path starts on Diakovská Street in Šaľa. Its length and starting point give you a clear reference if you are planning to cycle.

Summer Recreation in the Surrounding Area

The region around Šaľa is considered particularly well suited to summer recreation, including swimming and water sports, thanks to its warm summers, early start to spring and long, sunny autumn months. Near Kráľová nad Váhom, the dammed Váh, about 4 km from Šaľa, forms a body of water with a wide range of recreational uses. Activities there include swimming, yachting, windsurfing, water skiing and fishing. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the local conditions.

The Diakovce thermal baths are among the largest, best-developed and oldest tourist facilities in the area around Šaľa. If you plan to visit during your stay, check the current conditions before travelling.
