Vlčany offers two clear focal points for planning a trip: protected waters and a rich local history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether nature, churches and monuments or the cycling route should shape your stay. This lets you tailor your trip to the subjects that interest you most.
River Landscape and Natural Monuments
Vlčany lies in the Danubian Lowland near the Váh and the Little Danube. Vlčianske mŕtve rameno is one of the last relatively well-preserved oxbow lakes of the Váh. Its relatively well-preserved riverside vegetation belt and typical water-loving communities are among the defining features of this natural area. Designated a natural monument (PP, register number 188), it covers 8.23 ha and is under the jurisdiction of ŠOP–CHKO Dunajské luhy. It is not part of a large protected area. Observe the applicable protection status when visiting natural monuments.
Bábske jazero is also protected as a natural monument (PP, register number 5). It covers 3.52 ha, of which 3.25 ha is water. The area is likewise among the relatively well-preserved oxbow lakes of the Váh and features open water, along with typical flora and fauna. The trees around the water provide a natural windbreak. Comparing the two natural monuments, their area figures illustrate the difference in scale: Vlčianske mŕtve rameno covers 8.23 ha, while Bábske jazero covers 3.52 ha.
The traditional floodplain landscape around Vlčany includes agricultural land with trees and shrubs along watercourses and bodies of water, permanent grassland with meadows and pastures, arable land and gardens. A network of field tracks is another feature. Together, these elements describe a landscape where water, cultivated areas and woody vegetation coexist.
Churches, Fairs and Places of Remembrance
The first written mention of Vlčany dates to 1113, when the settlement was recorded under the name Forcas. On 20 June 1794, Vlčany was elevated to market town status and granted the right to hold four annual fairs: on the Thursday after the Feast of the Holy Trinity, and on 18 August, 1 October and 4 November. Another historical reference is Vlčany’s first fair in the early 19th century, held on the feast of Saint Joseph.
The Reformed Church was completed in 1785 and consecrated on 27 November of the same year. Its tower was remodelled and raised in 1888; since then, it has stood 32 metres high. The Roman Catholic Church was completed in 1808. The family coats of arms of the Károlyi and Waldstein families are above its entrance. Together, the two churches offer different ways to explore the town’s architectural history.
The monuments in the main square also commemorate local history. The First World War monument was unveiled on 5 October 1930 and commemorates 198 fallen residents of Vlčany. The Second World War monument stands beside it. The neighbouring memorials can be visited together while keeping their distinct historical associations separate.
Industrial History, Festival Culture and Cycling
The steam mill in Vlčany tells another side of the town’s history. Built in 1920, it replaced twelve watermills that stood on pontoons in a meander of the Váh at the beginning of the 20th century. The town’s history thus brings together permanent milling technology and the earlier floating watermills.
Various programme items were planned for Folklórne slávnosti MO MS Vlčany 2026. The programme included a competition to cook traditional dishes; Serbian poppy-seed rétes were announced as a speciality. A competition to cook traditional dishes was also part of the programme; Serbian poppy-seed rétes were announced as a speciality. A demonstration of making brooms from sorghum was also announced.
For cyclists, the Vážska cyklomagistrála Šaľa–Komárno is a separate element to consider when planning a trip. The route is 61 km long, passes above Vlčany and has a stated elevation difference of 13/19 m. It is classed among the more demanding sports routes. Take its length and classification into account when choosing your route, and check the current surface conditions and signage on site.
