In Kravany nad Dunajom, different chapters of architectural and local history meet a landscape on the Danube. This contrast is especially tangible at the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the village’s manor houses. There are also religious memorials, an observation tower, and the seasonal opportunity to swim or sunbathe along the Danube.

A Church with Several Building Phases

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Late Romanesque building dating from around 1232. Around 1712, Count Ferenc Gyulay had it renovated and redesigned in the Baroque style; in 1936, it was restored to reflect its Baroque appearance. Both its Late Romanesque origins and its later Baroque character are therefore part of its architectural history. The church also preserves two red marble tombstones. One bears an inscription about the noble de Lábathlan family and the year 1400—a further indication of the local history of the nobility.

The “Village of Manor Houses”

Kravany nad Dunajom is also known as the “Village of Manor Houses” because aristocratic families built many manor houses and estates there. One example is the manor house next to the Hroššo estate, the largest in the village by volume. Sándor Braun and Józsa Hazai had it built in the last quarter of the 19th century. After Gustáv Láng acquired the property in 1917, he had the building redesigned and unified in the Art Nouveau style. Its history follows a different sequence from that of the church: a later redesign followed its construction in the late 19th century.

Religious Memorials

On the Danube bank, opposite the estate of the Kuzmik family, stands a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was erected in 1843, restored in 1902 and placed on a marble pedestal. A chapel commemorates a former Lourdes grotto, which a local family had built out of gratitude for their son’s recovery. At the western end of the village, in the direction of Dunamocs, there is also a wayside shrine that locals call the Láng Chapel. It dates from the 1920s; a picture of the Virgin Mary can be seen in its barred niche. Together, these buildings illustrate different forms of religious remembrance in the village.

The Danube Bank and the Landscape

Kravany nad Dunajom lies in the Danube Lowland on a low levee on the left bank of the Danube. The southern part of the municipality is a floodplain with oxbow lakes, riverbanks and riparian woodland. For a view across the surrounding area, visit the observation tower, which offers a panorama of the landscape. In summer, you can swim or sunbathe along the Danube. Check local river conditions before visiting, as swimming conditions can change.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider what you would like your trip to focus on: architectural and noble history, or the Danube bank and landscape. This can help you assess Kravany nad Dunajom according to your own interests, without turning the individual sights into a fixed itinerary.
