Veľké Kosihy can be explored through two distinct themes: sensitive habitats in the cadastral area and buildings that offer insights into the village’s history. If you are looking for a destination where nature and culture sit side by side, these highlights can guide your travel plans. There is also a technical history connected with drainage and a more recent sports area.

Salt Meadows and Habitats in the Danube Region

At the Mostové site in the cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy, salt meadow or salt marsh communities of European importance can be found. They are among the most endangered habitats and provide a home for many threatened plant and animal species. This is a distinct natural-history highlight alongside the history of the village’s buildings.

The cadastral area is part of the Dunajské luhy Natura 2000 site. This protected area includes the main course of the Danube and the floodplain forests on its left bank. Its natural aquatic habitats include rivers and wetlands, which provide suitable conditions for waterbirds to breed. These include the Little Bittern, Common Tern, Garganey and Common Redshank. The area’s natural character is therefore reflected both in the endangered salt meadows near Mostové and in the aquatic habitats that are important for these bird species.

Neoclassical Buildings and Local History

The Calvinist church was built in 1819 in the neoclassical style. Its interior has wooden Protestant galleries along two sides. The church is considered well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose. Its architecture and continued religious use link a historic construction date with an ongoing function.

Around 1830, Károly Zámory had a neoclassical manor house built directly next to the church. The church and manor house are two distinct buildings with different functions, though both can be viewed in terms of their neoclassical style. The church is identified by its exact year of construction, while the manor house’s origins are indicated by an approximate date and its named patron. These distinctions offer a concrete way to explore local history without treating the two buildings as the same.

A Technical Aspect of the Water Landscape

The old pumping station is also part of Veľké Kosihy’s history. It was built into the Danube dyke in 1856 and was part of the drainage system of Žitný ostrov. This technical structure adds to the nature-related themes of water and wetland habitats, but from a different perspective: here, the focus is on infrastructure and drainage. The smaller, single-storey building of the steam pumping station has been out of operation since 1965.

The Sports Area

A more recent, clearly dated highlight is the multifunctional outdoor sports area. It was officially opened on 16 October 2021, as part of the Day of Sport and Health, on an area of 100 m². The “Jungle street workout” sports park included, among other things, an inclined bench, vertical and horizontal ladders, a low pull-up bar, low parallel bars, inclined parallel bars, and a two-section high pull-up bar. If exercise is an important part of your travel plans, these facilities may be of interest when choosing where to go. Check that the area is currently available before visiting.
