Okoličná Na Ostrove brings together cultural and historical themes from several architectural and historical periods with the natural setting of Ostrovné lúky. Churches and manor houses differ in their architectural styles and histories; archaeological finds date back to earlier periods. The landscape complements these attractions with habitats for various bird species. When planning your visit, you can prioritise architectural history, historical furnishings and nature according to your interests.
Churches and Historical Furnishings
The Roman Catholic Church of St Augustine was built in 1816 on the site of an older, probably Romanesque church and enlarged in 1830. Its history thus spans a probably Romanesque predecessor and an extension in the 19th century. The furnishings include a marble baptismal font with a repoussé copper lid in Baroque-classical forms from the 1830s, as well as an organ made by the Viktor Moszny company of Bratislava in the second half of the 19th century, located in the gallery.
The Reformed Church was built between 1801 and 1804 in the Classical style and is considered the largest Calvinist church on Žitný ostrov. It preserves a Gothic chalice from the 15th century, which was altered in 1618. The chalice dates back further than the 19th-century building phases. The church’s sacred heritage can therefore be understood through both its architecture and individual furnishings.
Manor Houses and Architectural History
The manor houses also differ in their dates and development. The Erdélyi family manor house was built in the 1860s in the Neoclassical style, next to Zoltán Erdélyi’s vineyard. The Csorba family manor house dates from around the mid-18th century; it was enlarged and remodelled in the Classical style in the mid-19th century. The Csontos family manor house was built in the early 19th century; the Hungarian writer Mór Jókai lived there several times in his youth.
A comparison highlights their different features: the Erdélyi manor is notable for its date and connection to the vineyard, while the Csorba manor reflects a sequence of construction, enlargement and remodelling. The Csontos house also has a connection to Jókai. Together, these houses illustrate several aspects of architectural history rather than all representing the same period or historical connection.
Archaeological Traces
Archaeological finds from the Roman period have been discovered in the cadastral area of Okoličná Na Ostrove; a burial ground from the period of the Avar Khaganate was also uncovered there. These traces add much earlier periods to the architectural history. Chronologically, they span a broad arc: from Roman finds and the Avar burial ground to the 15th-century Gothic chalice and the building and remodelling phases of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Ostrovné lúky and Its Bird Habitats
Okoličná Na Ostrove is associated with the protected Natura 2000 site of Ostrovné lúky. Ostrovné lúky’s open lowland landscape is an important habitat for the breeding and survival of the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus). The steppe, forest-steppe and agricultural landscape also provides suitable habitats for the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor) and tawny pipit (Anthus campestris). These habitats give the nature theme its character; sightings of individual species are seasonal and not guaranteed.
Public Transport and Cycling Connections
Public transport to and from Okoličná Na Ostrove includes bus services connecting it with surrounding municipalities and towns, as well as rail services on route 131 Bratislava–Dunajská Streda–Komárno. This route provides direct connections with Bratislava, Dunajská Streda, Komárno and Veľký Meder. If you are planning specific departures, check the timetables separately.
The international Podunajská cyklotrasa cycle route runs along the Danube, about 8 km south of the boundary of Okoličná Na Ostrove’s cadastral area; check route conditions before setting out on a cycling trip. In the wider region, the floodplain forests and river branches around Veľkolélsky ostrov are 6–8 km from the same boundary. This makes it possible to consider a cycling route and a floodplain landscape as distinct regional points of interest.
