The Roman military camp (fort) in Iža is an archaeological focal point, complemented by churches, a museum and a protected natural area. The fort is one of two national cultural monuments that make up the Slovak section of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Danube Limes. When planning your trip, you can combine Roman military history with later architectural and cultural heritage.

Roman History in Iža

Historical interpretation identifies the fort as a bridgehead of the legionary camp at Brigetio. It is the only permanently inhabited military fortress so far identified on the left bank of the Danube in the northern Pannonian Limes. Several temporary Roman camps near the fort date from the Marcomannic Wars and are considered exceptional evidence of Roman military history. The difference between the permanently inhabited fortress and the temporary camps gives your visit a tangible historical thread. The stone remains of Kelemantia’s fortifications are freely accessible to the public; check access conditions locally.

Museum, Workshops and Watchtowers

The Kelemantia Roman and Ethnographic Museum has 16 craft workshops showcasing Roman and traditional crafts. Throughout the year, the available workshops can only be visited as part of various organized events. They are therefore not offered daily; confirm the current programme if the workshops are a key reason for your trip.

The visiting hours, last updated on 13 September 2024, list Tuesday and Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. as regular opening hours. Visits for groups and individuals are scheduled on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by prior arrangement. The museum also welcomes visitors outside regular opening hours by prior appointment. As the hours were last updated in 2024, it is advisable to confirm them before travelling.

Two watchtowers built on Roman models stand along the main road at the eastern and western edges of the village. Visitors can climb them, making them small observation towers of sorts. Check access when you arrive.

Churches and Local History

The Roman Catholic Church of St Michael the Archangel is designated a national cultural monument. Built in the 16th century, it is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The main altar and pulpit date from the 1770s and are in the Rococo style. The Reformed Church was built in 1871; a second commemorative plaque is dedicated to the victims of the Second World War. Together, the two churches reflect different periods of construction and religious traditions in Iža.

A small arched bridge on the bank of the Danube is another local landmark: it is functional and locally known as the “Turkish Bridge.” It is believed to date from the Ottoman period. This traditional historical interpretation is explicitly a supposition.

Nature and Cycling Route

Bokrošské slanisko adds a nature conservation highlight to the cultural attractions. The area is protected as a nature reserve and has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2004. It includes the priority European habitat type 1340*: inland salt meadows and salt marshes. This precisely designated habitat category distinguishes Bokrošské slanisko from a nature area described in general terms.

For cycling trips, a signposted and developed route runs from Komárno via Iža to Patince and back to Komárno. Iža is therefore part of a named circular route that can be considered as a separate travel option alongside the cultural attractions.

Events and Trip Planning

The Štrúdľový Festival was held for the fifth time from 23 to 25 August 2024. The programme for that edition included traditional craft workshops and a cooking competition featuring classic beef goulash. This information relates to the 2024 edition; if a festival is to determine your travel dates, check the dates of the planned event.

When looking for a holiday apartment for your trip to Iža, you can start with the attractions you plan to visit: the fort and museum, churches, nature reserve or cycling route.
