Žemberovce lies at the transition between the northern part of the Ipeľská pahorkatina and the Štiavnické vrchy. When planning your trip, you can choose between two distinct focuses: the landscape along the Horšianska dolina educational trail and the area’s architectural and commemorative history. This lets you choose your destination according to your interests and decide which part of your stay should take centre stage.

Landscape and the Horšianska dolina educational trail

The Horšianska dolina educational trail is 5.8 kilometres long; allow approximately 2 to 2.5 hours to complete it. The route is rated as moderately difficult, and conditions may vary by season. For the northern section, the recommended direction is from Žemberovce to Horša. This section passes through the Horšianska dolina National Nature Reserve.

A viewpoint along the educational trail offers a unique view of a meander in the Sikenica and displays andesite pyroclastics. The route therefore leads not only through a valley, but also highlights a distinctive river feature and a geological characteristic. Along the way, the Sikenica must be crossed at a signposted ford. Passage through the valley is not permitted when water levels are high, during snowmelt, or after heavy rainfall. Check conditions before setting out.

Churches, castle and places of remembrance

The area’s architectural history can be seen in several distinct examples. Žemberovce Castle is a classicist manor house with a neo-Romanesque redesign. It was renovated in 1812 and extended with an addition at the end of the 19th century. The Roman Catholic Church Kostol Mena Panny Márie is a Baroque church built in 1754. The Evangelical church was built in 1886 in the traditional classicist style of Josephine churches.

The description of the Evangelical church also includes specific architectural features: the building has a single nave, a polygonal altar end and a sacristy; a tower stands in front of the building. Alongside the Baroque church, visitors interested in architecture can therefore find a building with a different character and clearly identifiable components.

Two registered places of remembrance are associated with Major Daniel Gonda. His birthplace is listed as a memorial house with a commemorative plaque. His grave, with its tombstone, is listed in Žemberovce as protected cultural heritage. These places provide another focus alongside the churches and castle: they relate to a specific person and his commemoration.

Traditions and local history

One of Žemberovce’s annual traditions is a Fašiangy procession. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific date in advance. Local history also includes traditional activities such as viticulture, weaving, basketry and the production of wooden goods. These crafts and agricultural activities are part of the area’s historical culture; they are not a promise of current visitor activities.

A dated example describes individual events in a Fašiangy celebration: on 5 March 2011, the programme included a home slaughter in front of the health centre and in the senior citizens’ club premises, as well as the traditional burial of the double bass at the cultural centre. The specific date makes clear that this description relates to a celebration held at that time; when planning a trip, distinguish it from the annual procession tradition.

Getting there and planning your time

Direct bus services run between Levice and Žemberovce. Check the timetable before travelling. You can allow the stated approximate duration of 2 to 2.5 hours for the educational trail; the recommended direction for the northern section is from Žemberovce to Horša. The combination of a nature route, churches and castle history offers various ways to choose your destination, without requiring every focus to take up the same amount of time during your stay.
