A tank in the Dom bojovej slávy military history gallery, churches with different construction phases and a recreational island almost a kilometre long give Kalná Nad Hronom several distinctive features. Cultural history and activity sit side by side here, with the Hron floodplain providing the landscape setting.

The Landscape Along the Hron

Kalná nad Hronom lies in the Danubian Lowland, on the right-bank floodplain of the Hron River. The municipal area is flat to gently hilly, with Tertiary deposits covered by a thick layer of loess. In the cadastral areas of Kalná and Kalnica, bodies of water account for a considerable area. The Hron flows along the eastern boundary of these two cadastral areas. The Nové Zámky–Zvolen railway line also runs through Kalná nad Hronom.

Archaeological Traces and Churches

The municipality was first mentioned in 1209 under the name “villa Kalon”. Archaeological finds date back further: an Eneolithic settlement with channelled pottery is documented in Kalná nad Hronom. Settlements from the Hallstatt period, the La Tène period and the Roman-Barbarian period have also been documented archaeologically. A grave from the Migration Period dates to the 4th or 5th century. Two prehistoric fortified sites survive as relics from Roman times and are associated with the former border region of the Quadi towards the Iazyges; they have not been archaeologically investigated.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul was originally built in the Baroque style in 1733 and received a new late Classicist-Romantic façade in 1866. It has a single nave, a semicircular presbytery and a three-storey tower at the front. Its furnishings include a Rococo pulpit with pink festoons dating from the mid-18th century, as well as a stone Rococo baptismal font in the shape of a shell. A Lamb of God is depicted on its lid; the font dates from the second half of the 18th century. The sacred heritage also includes a Reformed Classicist church dating from 1806.

Different periods of the town’s history therefore sit alongside one another: early settlement traces, the first recorded mention in 1209, and churches with construction phases from the 18th and 19th centuries. The architecture of the Church of St Peter and St Paul can be understood both through its design and through individual details of its furnishings.

Gallery, Recreational Island and Events

The Dom bojovej slávy is a military history gallery featuring a tank. It is open from April to October, Tuesday to Sunday, from 14:00 to 18:00; it is closed on Mondays. If you plan a visit, use these days and times as a guide and check the opening hours before travelling, as schedules may change.

Ostrov pohybu is a seven-hectare island almost a kilometre long, designed for active recreation and relaxation. It is suitable for runners, cyclists and families with children. This gives it a different focus from the gallery: activity and relaxation rather than a military history exhibition. Kalná nad Hronom also has sports and recreational facilities with a wellness area, a recreational pool open year-round and a fitness centre.

Local cultural life includes numerous events connected with religious holidays, local traditions and agricultural activities. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the relevant event dates when planning.
