Tekovský Hrádok lies on the right-hand floodplain of the Hron in the northeastern part of the Danubian Lowland. Its local history encompasses evidence from widely separated periods: from a Neolithic settlement to Slavic ramparts and castle remains. It also features a Reformed church with two clearly defined construction dates, as well as cycling and paddling routes. You can therefore treat culture and physical activity as different focuses of your trip; each activity listing has its own route and scheduling conditions.

Archaeological Traces and Local History

Among the oldest archaeological evidence in Tekovský Hrádok is a Neolithic settlement of the Volutian and Lengyel cultures. Slavic ramparts were built later, dating to the 9th and 10th centuries. These findings thus span different periods of local history, from prehistoric settlement to early medieval fortifications.

Remains of the Zemný hrad earthwork castle are located in the western part of the present-day cemetery. The vanished castle of Várad is also associated with Tekovský Hrádok. The former settlement of Horný Várad is documented under the name Warad from 1232. These names and remains represent different aspects of the historical heritage: a specific site with surviving earthwork remains, a vanished castle and an early settlement name.

Reformed Church and Building History

The Reformed, also known as Calvinist, church was originally built in 1780 as a Toleration Church and completely rebuilt in 1889. The two dates refer to different stages: 1780 to its original construction, and 1889 to its later complete reconstruction. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you would like to visit the building, check access arrangements in advance.

Hron Landscape, Cycling and Paddling Routes

In the Hronský Triatlon, the 5 km paddling route runs over moderately flowing water and ends on the right bank at Tekovský Hrádok. The transition area for the cycling leg is near Tekovský Hrádok; the route follows a field track and a grassy embankment along the Hron towards Turá. These details relate to two different disciplines in the same competition. If you are considering taking part, check both the dates and participation options before travelling.

Another cycling route is the 28.2 km MERIDIEM 2122, classified as a moderately difficult SPORT-MTB route. Its course uses asphalt, paved paths, and field and forest tracks. The 5 km refers only to the triathlon’s paddling leg, while the 28.2 km refers to this mountain bike route—the figures therefore describe different activities. Maintenance or weather conditions may affect the route; check its condition before setting out.
