Dobšiná combines hiking and cycling routes with cultural themes such as a unique fresco and the Pentecost tradition. When choosing what to see, you can focus on either nature trails or the town’s history. Plan your trip based on whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or are interested in architecture and local traditions.

Between the Ore Mountains and Slovak Paradise

Dobšiná lies in a deep valley at the transition between the Slovak Ore Mountains and Slovak Paradise National Park. There are hiking trails in Dobšiná and its surroundings, both in the national park and in the Ore Mountains. To get a broad idea of your outing, you can first choose one of these areas as your starting point, then look into a specific hiking option.

Dobšinská Ice Cave is a distinct natural and cultural attraction. It lies within the cadastral area of the town of Dobšiná, inside Stratená National Nature Reserve. The cave has been inscribed on the World Heritage List since 2000. Its location in a protected area and its World Heritage status give it a different thematic focus from the hiking routes through the two natural areas.

Hiking and cycling routes

A leisure hiking route leads from Dobšiná toward Čuntava, which is 1,112 metres high. This gives you a specific hiking direction and an elevation to aim for. Route SR18, by contrast, ends in Dobšiná at an SAD bus stop with a parking area. These two details are useful for different questions: Čuntava indicates the direction of an outing, while SR18 has an endpoint with a bus stop and parking area. Check the route details locally before setting out.

Cycling routes are also part of the landscape around Dobšiná: marked and unmarked routes run through the natural areas of Slovak Paradise, around the town and across it. Their markings and conditions may change, so check for current information before setting out. Unlike the named hiking direction toward Čuntava, this cycling route information covers a larger area and both types of marking.

Dobšinský kopec and the town’s history

Another route-related attraction is the Dobšinský kopec hill-climb course. It starts in Dobšiná on Hnilecká Street, is 6,810 metres long and has 30 bends. This clearly distinguishes it from the hiking and cycling routes: it is a hill-climb course with a fixed starting point and specific measurements.

Several neoclassical houses stand in the historic centre of Dobšiná. In a church in the town, a fresco depicting Hildegard of Bingen is located on the triumphal arch. The fresco is considered a unique example of the saint’s depiction in Slovakia. It offers a distinctive cultural point of interest alongside the houses in the historic centre. A church in Dobšiná was built in 1792 in the Baroque-Neoclassical style.

The Pentecost tradition is also part of the town’s history: it is linked to the founding of the miners’ guild, also known as the brotherhood. The Dobšiná Days and the Pentecost festival include a traditional Pentecost and craft market. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the current dates before making arrangements.
