A blast furnace dating from 1870, a church with Late Gothic origins, and marked hiking trails give Vlachovo a varied character. Visitors who want to combine cultural history with time outdoors will find a range of activities here, from ironmaking and architectural history to hiking and sport fishing.
Blast Furnace, Church, and Architectural History
Huta Karol is a blast furnace for producing iron from iron ore and a technical monument of European significance, dating from 1870. It was founded by Emanuel Andráši and named after his father, Karol Andráši. The blast furnace is one of the outdoor exhibits of the Slovenské technické múzeum Košice. As the visitor presentation may change, check the current visiting options before you go.
The Evangelical church also tells the story of several construction phases. It was originally a single-nave Late Gothic building, dating from around the end of the 15th century; it was extensively renovated in 1871. The altar dates from 1880. Its architectural history thus reveals both medieval origins and later changes.
Kaštieľ Andrášiovcov is a single-storey Baroque building from the second half of the 18th century, remodeled in the Neoclassical style in the first half of the 19th century. After its restoration in 2004–2005, the building became Vlachovo’s cultural center. Another architectural curiosity is the Grófska ľadovňa: its ceremonial entrance is modeled on Egyptian mastabas and pyramids. The structure was built by the Andrášiovci at the beginning of the 19th century; the room hewn into the rock was probably used to store hunted game.
The vibrant culture also includes the Folklórny súbor Stromíš, which preserves songs and traditions from Vlachovo and the region. The Výstup na Stromíš is a traditional event. It commemorates Štefan Klement and Ján Elexa, two residents from Vlachovo who died in the battles of the Second World War. Check the dates if you would like to coordinate your trip with an event. In 2025, the Festival ľudového spevu a tanca reached its 31st edition, and the Remeselnícky jarmok its 19th.
Hiking, Fishing, and Nature
A yellow-marked hiking trail passes through Vlachovo. The municipality also recommends a yellow-marked route from Vlachovo in the direction of Stromíš and Babiná. For a longer outing, the loop from Vlachovo to Malý Radzim and back is a clearly quantified option: it is 18.8 kilometers long, has 1,201 meters of elevation gain, and is described as a full-day hike. These details can help you gauge how much time to allow when planning.
As part of a broader themed route, Iron Road II runs from Drnava via Krásnohorské Podhradie, Rožňava, Betliar, Nižná Slaná, and Vlachovo to Dobšiná. It offers another perspective on Vlachovo as part of a longer sequence of destinations, without conflating the local hiking trails with this route.
The Andrášiovské rybníky comprise two ponds equipped for sport fishing. The Slaná flows right beside them, with waters for trout and grayling fishing. Local fishing regulations may change, so check the current conditions in advance. In 2003, a new spawning pond for the protected common frog was created at Močiar pod Michlovom.
