Michalovce combines cultural history with nature: the Zemplínske múzeum brings together exhibitions on art, archaeology and regional traditions, while Kerta and Hrádok offer their own park and recreational facilities. When planning your trip, you can consider exhibitions, city landmarks and designated cycling routes as distinct highlights.

Exhibitions and architectural history

The permanent exhibition Klenotnica presents valuable art-historical, archaeological and numismatic artefacts in an interactive, modern way, in a reconstructed central Baroque-classical manor house. They are connected with the manor house, the Sztáray family and the Zemplín region. Another exhibition is devoted to the life and times of the knight Albert of Michalovce, also known as Albert Užský and Albert Viniansky (1380?–1434). It is housed in the oldest medieval rooms of the noble residence.

The archaeological exhibition presents significant finds and assemblages in chronological order. It covers prehistoric, protohistoric, early historic and early medieval settlement in the Zemplín region. It is currently displayed in the basement; if this exhibition location is important for your visit, check in advance to see how it is currently presented. The ethnographic exhibition brings together other aspects of regional life: Pozdišovce pottery, shepherds’ art from southern Zemplín, traditional crafts and ways of life, as well as examples of folk fishing and folk textiles.

You can also encounter different historical periods beyond the exhibitions. The Rotunda of Michalovce, with its circular nave and horseshoe-shaped apse, is considered evidence of the establishment of Christianity in the Zemplín region and is one of the city’s oldest cultural and historical monuments. On the grounds of the Zemplínske múzeum at Kostolné námestie, stone remains of a sacred rotunda lie near a model. The Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary has medieval origins; its oldest part dates from the 15th century.

The artist Teodor Jozef Mousson lived in a villa on Hrádok from 1931 to 1944 and later had a studio added to its north side. Mousson House on Hrádok, which now houses the Michalovce Observatory, was originally built for members of the Sztáray noble family. Also on Hrádok stands the Neo-Gothic chapel, which is considered the Sztáray family crypt. It is a free copy of the Gothic St Michael’s Chapel in Košice and was completed and consecrated in 1898.

Parks and astronomy

Kerta Park contains around 60 rare tree species, including a 370-year-old English oak. The nature park’s renovation added 1,920 metres of new paths, a pavilion, an entrance gate and two elements of a children’s playground. The renovated Hrádok area complements this park setting with an amphitheatre with 400 seats, seating areas, a picnic area and a barbecue area. It also includes several children’s play features and walking paths. The facilities were described after the 2026 revitalisation; individual features may change. If a particular amenity is important for your visit, check its current status.

For astronomy and natural sciences, the Krajská hvezdáreň in Michalovce serves as the astronomical centre of the Košice region. Through science outreach activities, it seeks to bring knowledge of astronomy, space exploration and natural sciences to children and adults. This provides a distinct focus alongside the historical exhibitions, without requiring a particular event date.

Cycling routes and regional nature

A designated cycling route leads from Michalovce via Zemplínska Široká and Iňačovce to the Senianske rybníky ponds, then back to Michalovce via Senné and Palín. Another connection to Zemplínska Šírava follows designated cycling routes. The route to the Senianske rybníky lists a sequence of places; the connection to Zemplínska Šírava offers a different regional perspective. Check current route conditions before setting off on a cycling trip.

In 1965, Zemplínska Šírava was added to the list of internationally important areas for the protection of waterbirds in Europe and North Africa, Category B. It has significant scientific research value and is the subject of systematic ornithological research. The area’s natural appeal thus extends beyond the parks in Michalovce: the designated cycling routes and Šírava’s status as a protected area and its research significance each offer distinct considerations for trip planning.
