In Kaluža, visitors with different interests will find plenty to explore: water-based attractions range from pools and slides to a beach and campsite, alongside two described cycling routes and local sights. When planning, it helps to treat the water attractions as separate facilities rather than as one single complex: Thermalpark Šírava is located on the Medvedia hora peninsula in the municipality of Kaluža; another non-swimmer pool is in the centre of Kaluža, on Zemplínska Šírava.

Distinguishing between Kaluža’s water attractions

Thermalpark Šírava includes a water park with a wave pool and swimming pool, as well as a wellness centre focused on relaxation, with a sauna area. The park also offers, among other things, a long and a short slide, a lazy river, a wave bay and a children’s playground. This brings together different kinds of water and leisure activities. Individual attractions may change, so check what is currently available before your visit.

The non-swimmer pool in the centre of Kaluža, on Zemplínska Šírava, is 112 metres long, 12 metres wide and 1.2 metres deep. It has been in operation since 2003. The pool complex also includes two children’s pools, each 40 centimetres deep. These figures give a clear sense of the pools’ sizes without equating them with the facilities at Thermalpark. Measurements may change after renovations, and the children’s facilities may also change. Therefore, check the latest information before your visit.

Another side of the holiday resort’s water and shoreline attractions can be found on the banks of Zemplínska Šírava: the Kaluža holiday resort has a beach and campsite there. The attractions described thus include both pools and a beach on the lakeshore. You can decide which of these options will shape your stay by considering each facility and what it offers.

Two cycling routes, two different route descriptions

Both cycling routes start in Kaluža, but lead to different destinations. The Kaluža–Morské oko route heads east towards Jovsa and continues to Lake Morské oko. For the Kaluža–Vyšná Rybnica route, the intermediate places are specified: it runs from Kaluža via Kusín, Jovsa and Poruba pod Vihorlatom to Vyšná Rybnica. The descriptions therefore make it possible to distinguish between a route with Lake Morské oko as its destination and the route via the named places to Vyšná Rybnica. As the route may change, check the current route before setting off.

A church and memorial as local sights

The Greek Catholic Church “Gréckokatolícky kostol sv. Tomáša” is part of the local architectural history. It is a single-nave eclectic building: “single-nave” refers to its ground plan, with one main nave, while “eclectic” indicates a combination of different architectural styles. The presbytery ends in a semicircle; the projecting tower dates from 1928. These features give the building a distinctive architectural character, making it a sightseeing option separate from the water and cycling attractions.

The “Pamätník osloboditeľom obce Kaluža” memorial is also one of the municipality’s sights. Together with the church, it forms a cultural focus alongside the leisure attractions. This offers a clear choice when planning your trip: you can make the water attractions, one of the two cycling routes that start in Kaluža, or the local sights your main focus. These themes complement one another, but do not imply a fixed order or a combined excursion.
