The Margeciansky Tunnel gives Margecany a distinctive connection to railway history. Paths by the Ružín Reservoir, local culture and a railway line with connections to several cities add to the picture. If you would like to combine historical discoveries with excursions, you will find various reasons here to plan a trip.
Tunnel and railway as a common thread
The Margeciansky Tunnel was built in 1872 during construction of the single-track Košice–Bohumín railway. On 22 March 1985, it was entered in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic as a technical monument. Its construction history and protected status give the structure a clearly defined historical significance.
Margecany railway station is a suitable starting point for the “Z Margecian cez tunel popri Ružíne” excursion. On the tour, a gravel path runs directly above the Ružín Reservoir and follows its coves. Check current path conditions before setting out. The tunnel is passable for cars, cyclists and pedestrians; as access conditions may change, check them before your visit.
Paths by the water
A paved path along the northern shore of the Ružín Reservoir runs from Margecany past Počkaj Beach and Rolova Huta to the old Margeciansky Tunnel. Wooden sculptures and educational panels turn it into a fairy-tale trail. This offers a second specific way to experience the route: here, the trail’s design and the sequence of the places mentioned shape the experience, while the “Z Margecian cez tunel popri Ružíne” tour is described by its gravel path above the reservoir and its course along the coves.
At Počkaj Beach in Margecany, renting a boat or pedal boat is one possible activity. Check its current availability before travelling. The reservoir is also used for recreation; check the relevant conditions separately for specific water activities.
Cultural history and local traditions
The Folklórny súbor Jadlovec folklore ensemble was founded in 1976 as a women’s singing group and was soon expanded to include music and dance sections. Its history shows how the ensemble developed beyond its original singing format.
Since 2011, FSk Jadlovec and the municipality of Margecany have jointly organized the Margecianske fajnoty event. Invited groups prepare food there in front of visitors and offer it for sale. If you would like to attend the event, check the specific date before your trip.
Another historical trace leads to Rolova Huta: settlement of the village by German settlers began in 1597, to smelt copper ores. The Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch was renovated in the Neo-Gothic style in the early 20th century. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you would like to visit the interior, check access locally.
Plan your journey and stay
Margecany lies on railway line No. 180, which connects Košice, Žilina and Bratislava. Check the timetable for your travel date. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide whether railway history, paths by the water or a cultural event will be the focus of your stay. This lets you tailor your search to your planned interests without requiring a particular route or fixed itinerary.
