Shoemaking and technical monuments give Kluknava a distinctive cultural identity. They are joined by sacred and aristocratic architectural heritage, as well as a variety of ways to explore nature: a circular educational trail, a lookout point above the village and Roháčka, the highest peak in the Čierna hora mountains. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing among these themes according to your interests: crafts and architecture offer a different focus from a trail through predominantly natural surroundings.
Shoe Museum and Shoemaking
The Shoe Museum exhibition is housed in the listed Dom sluĹľobnĂctva s hospodárstvom near the village centre. Its subject reaches far back in time: the museum presents footwear used from prehistoric times to the present day. Visitors can thus encounter different eras through a familiar everyday object.
The exhibition also includes the Kluknavská chyža, with a shoemaker’s room and workshop. Historical tools and shoes illustrate the craft, while figures in historical folk costumes add to the display. Visitors interested in history can learn not only how footwear changed, but also see the workshop and its equipment. The collection thus connects a single craft with a long span of time, without requiring a comprehensive overview of every era.
Bridge, Copper and Technical Monuments
The covered wooden bridge over the Hornád River connects Kluknava with the settlement of Štefánska Huta. It is a technical monument built in 1832. The ruins of Europe’s first electrolytic copper production plant are in Štefánska Huta; the plant was built between 1845 and 1848. The bridge and ruins represent different aspects of technological history: one provides a crossing over the river, while the other preserves the remains of early copper production.
Another technical site is the watermill in Kluknava, with its Francis turbine, which dates from 1910. Together with the dates of the bridge and factory, it forms a timeline stretching from the early 19th century into the 20th century. For travellers interested in technical heritage, the story is not confined to a single structure: the bridge, factory ruins and mill represent different forms of human work and technology.
Sacred and Aristocratic Architectural Heritage
The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria was built in 1555 as a Protestant Renaissance church. During a comprehensive restoration in 2012–2013, new mosaics were added to modernise the interior. The church continues to serve its religious purpose. Its construction date, original denomination, later restoration and present-day use are distinct chapters in its history.
The Baroque manor house in Kluknava also brings together several art-historical influences: it has Renaissance origins and dates from 1715–1720. It belonged to the Kluknava-Iliašovce branch of the Csáky family. Describing it as a Baroque manor house while noting its Renaissance origins is not contradictory; these terms refer to different aspects of the building. Another sacred site is the Chapel of Saint Anne in the nearby forests of Kluknava. It remains a place of pilgrimage, with believers visiting every year on the last Sunday in July.
Educational Trail and Lookout
The “Osobnosti a história Kluknavy” educational trail is a circular route approximately 7.5 kilometres long, running mostly through natural surroundings. The Green Point lookout tower is above Kluknava and about a 1.5-hour walk from the village. These details help with different aspects of planning: the Green Point figure is an approximate walking time from the village, while the trail is described by its length and circular route. At 1,028.5 metres above sea level, Roháčka is the highest peak in the Čierna hora mountains.
The Shoe Museum, church, manor house, bridge and mill represent crafts, architectural history and technology; the educational trail and Green Point offer other points of reference for planning. You can match your choice of holiday apartment to whatever makes Kluknava special for you, without combining the different destinations into a fixed day-by-day itinerary.
