Gelnica can be explored through several specific themes: mining history, religious architecture and trails in the Hnilec Valley. The collections of the Banícke múzeum cover mining and folk culture, as well as geology, local history and guilds. Both technological developments and everyday life are therefore among the themes that shape the town.

Mining History and Technical Relics

Exhibits at the Banícke múzeum include mining tools and lamps, old maps and wooden models showing how ore was brought to the surface. The collection also includes miners’ work and holiday clothing, mining symbols and a scale model of a mine entrance. The museum is housed in a stone building erected in 1805, using stones from the ruins of Gelnica Castle.

At the Banský skanzen, which is still being developed, a historic stamp-mill crusher is in operation, powered by water from nearby Turzovské jazero. A type of smelting furnace particularly characteristic of Smolník, Gelnica and the Hnilec Valley was reconstructed after 300 years. Hydropower also played a part in the town’s history: in 1894, Gelnica became the first town in what is now Slovakia to establish a public electricity supply, to which hydropower contributed.

Štôlňa Jozef was opened to the public in August 2016 and became part of the Banícke múzeum exhibition. This describes access at the time, not current operations; check before your visit whether access is currently available.

Religious Buildings and Architectural History

The church Rímskokatolícky kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie is located in Gelnica. Its surviving Gothic features include original rib vaults in the side aisles and sanctuary. A figural pastophorium rests on a tall, spiral-twisted, tower-like base; a stone sedile is located on the south side of the sanctuary. The Gotická cesta identifies the church as its best-known monument in Gelnica. The town centre also has designated heritage status: it was declared a conservation area in 1992.

Another architectural landmark is the stone bridge over the Hnilec. Built between 1837 and 1845 as a solid rubble-stone structure with two arches, it is now used by pedestrians. In the evangelical church, the balustrade of the so-called baníckeho chóru features an elongated niche with a sculptural mining scene flanked by two miners. The surviving miners’ cottages are also a testament to the town’s long mining tradition.

Hrad v Gelnici is designated a national cultural monument of Slovakia. Its grounds are now used as a park, a place to relax and a destination for walks. Alongside its cultural and historical significance, the castle grounds thus offer an opportunity to spend time outdoors.

Trails, Views and Lakes

Gelnica lies in the Hnilec Valley, in the northeastern part of the Volovské vrchy and northwest of Košice. The Banský náučný chodník starts at Banícke námestie, which is easily reached from Gelnica mesto railway station. The mining educational trail is self-guided, linear and can be walked in either direction; it is used year-round. The trail and the mining sites along it are maintained. Nevertheless, check conditions before your visit.

A blue-marked mountain trail leads from Gelnica to Vyhliadka mládeže / Gloriet. The viewpoint is at an elevation of 785 metres and consists of a rocky outcrop with a rest area, offering views across all of Gelnica. Gelnica is also the starting point for the 40-kilometre Route No. 2858, which is suitable for touring bikes and considered relatively challenging.

The lakes also offer different ways to enjoy the area: fishing is possible at Spodné jazero, while Horné jazero is 17 metres deep and serves as a natural swimming pool. When planning a trip to Gelnica, you can choose from mining and architectural history, trails with different attractions, and activities by the water.
