Sklené combines a distinctive location at the foot of the Žiar Mountains with traces of glassmaking and Renaissance buildings. There are also hiking trails to a variety of destinations. Visitors looking for accommodation here can plan their stay around culture, history or outdoor activities; before setting out on a hike, it is important to check the conditions on the relevant trail.

Location and Landscape

Sklené lies at the southern tip of Turčianska záhradka, on the eastern foothills of the Žiar Mountains. The municipality’s elevation ranges from 511 to 892 metres above sea level. Its location at the foot of the mountains forms a scenic setting for the village, while its architectural and industrial history provides a distinct focus of its own.

Renaissance Architecture and Local History

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in 1626–1627 in the Renaissance style on the foundations of an older Gothic structure. It was declared a national cultural monument in 1963. Inside is a Renaissance hall. The former judge’s house is originally a Renaissance building from the early 17th century and was remodeled after 1912.

The settlement pattern is also part of Sklené’s character: the municipality has a chain-like colonization settlement pattern. The term describes a distinctive form of development and complements the picture of its individual historic buildings. The cemetery around the church contains cast-iron crosses dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A winter lime tree stands by the church, estimated to be about 400 years old. It is around 20 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 635 centimetres. The tree’s condition may change.

A memorial was unveiled in 1994 at the site of the Sklené massacre. It is another historic landmark in the village.

Traces of Glassmaking

Glassmaking forms a distinct part of the village’s history. Glass was produced in Sklené until 25 June 1875. Remains of the first glass furnaces have been preserved at Biely potok, where a glass furnace still stands. This makes it possible to place the history both in time and in relation to a surviving furnace.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

A red-marked hiking trail leads from Sklené to Bralová skala, where the well-known Cesta hrdinov SNP passes. Experienced hikers can reach Bralová skala via forest and mountain trails. Before setting out, check the current trail markings and local trail conditions.

A blue-marked trail leads from Sklené to Sklenianske lúky. The regional hiking trail list also includes the Ráztočno–Sklené pri Handlovej trail, which is 9 kilometres long and marked blue. These are different trail descriptions with different destinations. Before setting out, check the current trail markings; after storms or maintenance work, pay particular attention to the local signs.

For access to Útulňa SNP Sklené, a route description from August 2024 specifies blue-marked trails at first, followed by red-marked trails, starting from Sklené. The route is listed as 5.3 kilometres and approximately 1.5 hours. This time is an estimate; check the trail conditions locally.

The Remäta–Sklené cycling route passes the Horský hotel Remata recreation centre and then runs across meadows along the ridge into the municipality of Sklené. Surface conditions may change; check them before setting off. The tours described therefore differ not only in their destinations but also in how their routes are planned.
