Budiš lies in the southwestern part of the Turčianska kotlina basin, at the foot of the Žiar Mountains and in the source area of the Jasenica stream. The municipal area is predominantly wooded and hilly; fir-beech forests and spruce forests grow at higher elevations. Three mineral springs, a designated cycling loop and several sites connected with local history offer different ways to shape your stay. When choosing Budiš for a trip, you can weigh up the options of scenery, visiting the springs, cycling and exploring historical themes.
Mineral Springs and Visiting
There are three mineral springs in the municipal area, located along a tectonic fault. One publicly accessible spring is west of Budiš. From the car park on the main road between Budiš and Jasenovo, it is about 100 metres to the spring. Check local conditions before your visit. From Turčianske Teplice, you can reach the mineral spring by car in about 13 minutes, heading towards Nitrianske Pravno; public transport does not go to the spring. Check transport conditions before setting off. The excursion programme offered by the spa resorts in Turčianske Teplice also includes visits to and tastings of the mineral springs in Dubovom and Budiš. Dates may change; check the programme in advance.
Cycling Between Sklené and Budiš
The Žiar cycling loop runs between Sklené and Budiš and back, covering 36.5 kilometres. It is classified as a moderately difficult sport MTB route. On the way to Budiš, the route turns onto a forest track before reaching the town and climbs to the Štyri chotáre locality. The length and difficulty rating provide specific points of reference for planning the ride; the described climb is also part of the route’s character. Check the route before setting off, as its description may change.
Glassmaking History and Folk Architecture
The history of Budiš’s Volunteer Fire Brigade dates back to 1891. Above the town, at Na Hutách, a glassworks operated, producing glass objects. It was active for more than a century and is believed to have operated between 1750 and 1870. After the glassworks closed, members of the noble family in question built three tourist villas at Na Hutách. Later, these were opened to visitors from Budiš and the surrounding area. This sequence connects the area’s former glass production with its later use for tourism.
An ensemble of folk architecture adds to the townscape. It consists of single-storey, three-room log houses with gabled roofs and distinctive Podlomenica details. The number of storeys, room layout and roof shape give a clear impression of the ensemble’s architectural features. Together with the history of the glassworks, it offers another way to explore local history, distinct from the mineral springs and cycling loop.
Events and Finding Accommodation
Among the activities currently organised by the municipality is a sledding event. Before travelling, check whether it is taking place during your preferred dates. When looking for a holiday apartment in Budiš, it helps to decide on the focus of your stay first: visiting the springs, cycling the route or exploring local history. Planning requirements differ—from the drive and lack of public transport to the spring to the length and difficulty rating of the cycling loop. Also check the latest dates for excursions and events.
