The Orava Reservoir is more than a body of water: it provides a habitat for fish and, in particular, waterbirds. In Námestovo District, marshes, mountain landscapes and cultural sites complement this natural setting. Discoveries range from a rain-fed raised bog and the history of a flooded island to hiking trails and activities on the water or in the snow.
Water, marshes and mountain views
Klinské Marsh is a national nature reserve in the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area. It is a well-preserved, unforested raised bog fed exclusively by precipitation. At Slaná voda, a different connection between marshland and water can be seen: the area at the foot of Babia Hora includes an iodine-bromine saltwater spring and one of the best-preserved marshes in Slovakia. The marsh covers 108 hectares and can be explored via a wooden walkway. Check the current access rules before your visit.
Pilsko also combines a protected landscape with far-reaching views. The mountain lies within the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area; its Polish section is part of the Pilsko Nature Reserve. From the summit, views extend to Babia Hora, the Tatras, the Choč Mountains, the Little Fatra and Poland. Hiking trails lead to the summit from Sihelné, Mútne and Oravské Veselé. Island history and cultural discoveries
Slanica Island is the surviving remnant of the village of Slanica, which was flooded during construction of the Orava Reservoir. The island is home to a memorial cemetery, a Calvary and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The history of the submerged village and its surviving buildings go hand in hand here: the site reveals both the changes brought by the reservoir’s construction and its religious heritage.
Another item of technical heritage is the Kysucko-Orava Forest Railway. It is a national technical cultural monument and is considered unique worldwide. Trails and activities in every season
The Oravská Lesná Forest Education Trail is 4.3 kilometres long and offers three options for walks through the forest. Access is seasonal; Route 1 is closed in winter. At the Orava Reservoir, Námestovo Water Park offers an inflatable water park as well as pedal boat and motorboat rentals. For winter sports, Orava Snow in Oravská Lesná offers two lifts and seven ski runs with a total length of 8.5 kilometres.
