Banícky dom showcases the traditional way of life and living conditions of a mining family in a house with original historic furnishings. The back room houses an exhibition on the history of mining in the area around Vyšná Boca.

Mining History and Architectural Heritage

Vyšná Boca has been mentioned as a royal mining town since 1551. The village’s history therefore reaches far back to a time when mining shaped the life of the community.

The Evangelical church was built in 1785 as a Neoclassical church of the Edict of Toleration, on the site of a place of worship dating from the late 16th century. Its architectural features include a wooden ceiling and galleries on three sides.

The tradition of housebuilding also spans Vyšná Boca and Nižná Boca: traditional houses were built there in the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. Their distinctive floor plans expand on the three-part layout. Both communities also had a form of meadow farming. Protected hay barns and stable buildings give the area its distinctive character.

Demonstrations of the traditional hay-transport method known as “Bocké batohy” are planned at Banícky dom during the summer. As this is a seasonal programme, check before travelling whether the demonstrations are taking place.

Valley and Mineral Spring

Together with the nearby communities of Nižná Boca and Malužiná, Vyšná Boca is part of the 16-kilometre-long Bocianska Valley. The community is also located in the protected zone of the Low Tatras National Park (NAPANT).

The Kyselka mineral spring emerges from a mine tunnel. Its iron-rich mineral water has a sour taste.

Educational Trails on Foot or by Bicycle

The Zlatnica educational trail is accessible year-round and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. It is 12 kilometres long and has 11 information stops.

The Bacúch–Vyšná Boca educational trail is of moderate difficulty and, at 14 kilometres, slightly longer than Zlatnica. It has an elevation gain of 690 metres and takes approximately five and a half hours. Five information boards cover nature conservation, history and mining; individual boards may be replaced or moved. Trail conditions can vary by season, so it is advisable to check them before setting off.

Hiking at Bocianske sedlo

Bocianske sedlo is a junction of hiking trails. These include the yellow-marked trail from Vyšná Boca to Králička and on to Chata generála Milana Rastislava Štefánika below Ďumbier.

Another hike, Rovná hoľa, starts in the mining village of Vyšná Boca below Čertovica. Trail conditions and markings may change; check both before setting off.

The shelter at Bocianske sedlo offers protection in rain or thunderstorms and is close to a frequently used ridge trail. Check its condition and whether it is suitable for your needs on site.

Winter Sports

The municipality is home to the Bačova Roveň ski centre, with groomed, artificially snow-covered slopes and night skiing. It operates seasonally; check conditions for your travel dates.
