Bukovina lies in the center of the Liptov Basin, below the Chočské vrchy and in the valley of the Sestrč stream. There are several different options to choose from when planning your trip: local history, walks in beech and spruce forests, a cycling route, and activities on the water. Liptovská Mara is nearby and adds another option; it is a separate destination outside Bukovina.
Landscape and walks
The municipality is predominantly deforested and hilly; its subsoil consists of Tertiary sandstones and clays. Walks in beech and spruce forests are possible along the border with the Orava region. This brings together different aspects of the landscape: the municipality’s hilly, predominantly deforested terrain and forest walks near the border with the Orava region.
If you would like to plan your stay around scenery and outdoor activity, this distinction is useful: the forest walks mentioned are located along the Orava border, while the description of the municipality as a whole focuses on hilly, predominantly deforested terrain. This lets you plan a walk as a separate activity without assuming that the entire area is covered by continuous forest.
Manor house and local history
In the northern part of Bukovina, on the road between Liptov and Orava, there is a renovated manor house. From there, a blue-and-white-marked hiking trail leads to the foot of Starhrad. The foot of Starhrad is the endpoint of the trail and a specific landmark for the hike.
Another historical thread leads to Podhradie: the settlement developed as an outer-bailey settlement of Liptovský Starý hrad and became part of Bukovina in the 14th century. This development adds the history of a former settlement and its incorporation into Bukovina to the story of the manor house.
A 2024 report by the Slovak National Museum mentions the exhibition “Sedliacka usadlosť Bukovina” at Bukovina 17 and its use for educational purposes since 2015. This is another cultural point of interest in the municipality, separate from the history of Podhradie and the manor house.
Cycling and activities on the water
The “Z Bukoviny do Iľanovskej doliny” cycling route is 34.9 kilometers long. It runs along paved secondary roads or field tracks and is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. Its length, surface and suitable bike types give you specific information to help plan your ride. Check current access conditions before setting off.
Nearby Bukovina, the Liptovská Mara reservoir offers opportunities for swimming, sport fishing, boating and water-based recreational sports. This adds a nearby water activity to the options for walks and cycling. These activities take place at the reservoir, not within Bukovina.
When choosing a focus for your stay, you can distinguish between the options: the hiking trail leads from the renovated manor house to the foot of Starhrad, the cycling route has a specified length and two possible surfaces, and the water activities are near the municipality at the reservoir. You can decide which option to prioritize on your trip based on the activity you prefer.
