Zázrivá combines mountain scenery and trails with a strong Korbáčik tradition. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you mainly want to hike, cycle, ski in winter or discover local culture during your stay. Options range from a short circular trail with information panels to a hiking route listed as taking more than three hours.
Scenery and trails around Zázrivá
The municipality extends into several mountain ranges in the Fatra-Tatra region and the Central Beskids: Malá Fatra, Kysucká vrchovina and Oravská Magura. The landscape includes numerous meadows, pastures, waterfalls, ponds and streams. They are mostly surrounded by spruce and beech forests and dwarf pine.
The 2-kilometre nature trail in Zázrivá-Dolina starts at the entrance to the rescue station and loops back there, passing a shelter and benches. At a moderate pace, it takes about an hour to walk; check trail conditions locally. Eight information panels cover the activities of the rescue station and eco-centre, the region’s animals and plants, birds of prey, Zázrivá, Malá Fatra National Park, the surrounding trees, and nature conservation and tourism.
For a much longer hike, the route from Zázrivá via Medzirozsutce to Veľký Rozsutec is listed as taking 3 hours and 20 minutes. This is an estimate and may vary depending on conditions and the route taken. Comparing it with the approximately one-hour nature trail can help you gauge different timeframes for your plans. Cycling is also an option: the 20-kilometre Terchová–Zázrivá–Hoľa route passes through Zázrivá. Surface and route conditions may vary.
Explore nature and find out about winter activities
Zázrivá’s eco-garden features various plant and tree species, a wetland pond, nesting boxes and watering stations, as well as areas for insects and reptiles. The rescue station serves a different purpose: it rescues injured, weakened or otherwise impaired animals, especially birds, from across Slovakia.
Local listings include two ski centres for winter. The Kozinec ski centre in Zázrivá-Havrania has numerous runs that are more suited to experienced skiers. Dolná Plešivá is a ski centre right in Zázrivá. The centres operate seasonally and conditions may change; check what is available for your travel dates.
Korbáčik, cheese and local culture
Zázrivský korbáčik is traditionally made almost entirely by hand: curd cheese is steamed in hot water, pulled into strands and then braided into a korbáčik. According to tradition, this speciality has been made in Zázrivá since the second half of the 19th century. Salaš Zázrivá also offers a demonstration of the artisanal production of fresh and smoked sheep’s cheese.
Salaš Syrex offers a different kind of visit: it can be visited year-round, and you can pet the horses there. The Church of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1928, and wooden houses are among Zázrivá’s sights for those interested in culture and architectural history.
Zázrivské dni takes place at the end of July. The programme includes cultural events, Korbáčik-making competitions, farms, craftspeople, a fair with people in traditional costumes and a parade. Dates and programme vary from year to year. If the festival is important to your trip, check the specific dates and programme for your travel year.
